The $250.00 question
« on: July 15, 2004, 12:51:32 PM »

Hello all,
I am finally returning to warm water fishing after way too long...I inhereted a very old bass boat (15 ' 1967 Sea Sprite w/50 horse Merc) from my wife's gramps.  I was hoping that some of you could advise me on some priorties as far a gear, tackle, eletronics, etc...I only have about $250.00 or so to spend now, hopefully more to come.  I do have a light spin-cast setup, tackle box with mostly trout stuff, and a pretty understanding wife. Any tips would be great!
Thanks!

Start off with your tackle and worry about your electronics later. With the limited amount of money you have I would start out with low end shimano reel and a decent rod at a low price like the Berkley Lightening Rod. Shimano has a reel that sells for $39 and it is a decent little reel. Berkley Lightening rods run about $27. If you start off with two rods and reels and calculate in some string and tax you are going to be just over $150. That will give you $100 to spend on baits. Stick to the basics right now. Get you a couple of good quality spinnerbaits, a few crank baits, a top water or two, and a few bags of worms. That's going to wipe you out for now, but if you pick up a bait or two every pay period or when ever you have a little hidden cash, you will be surprised how fast those baits will collect. I know electronics are important but for now just get a feel for things and get your baits and rods and reels built up. Christmas will be here before you know it, so pull out your bass pro shops catelog, give your wife a kiss, and show her the pages with graphs on them. They do have inexpensive graphs ond if money is tight pick up a cheap one. A cheap graph will give you one of the most important things that you need and that is depth. The more expensive ones give you fine details and all kind of switches and modes that no one knows how to use. I think most people will agree with me when I say I use my gragh mainley to find creek channels, humps, ledges, etc. Basically I want to know how deep the area I'm fishing is. I hope this helps you and good luck out there.

I agree with Rattle.  The basics of rod, reel, line, and baits is what you need now.  I have a friend that in the past has picked up great stuff at garage sales and pawn shops, if you want to give that a try.  I would suggest a white and chartruese for the two colors of spinnerbaits, as those seem to work most of the time.  Good luck with your shopping and keep us posted.

Rattle...in my opinion is right on target with his advice.  As far as electronics...well...I have three units on my boat and a GPS...I could take each of them tie them to a line and I am pretty sure I wouldn't catch one fish.  The other thing is...once I get to know a lake I use the units less and less...end up sight fishing more than anything.  So the basics are the key...lure selection....presentation are the things I would work on for now.  As far as that Bass Pro and Christmas idea...I am stealing that one for myself!  ;D

When I first started, I hit every pawn shop in town looking for rods & reels. Some pretty good deals can be found there just play with them a little and make sure everything on it works and that it is smooth reeling. If the outside of the reel is beat up and scratched up pretty bad leave it there. I found that those usually weren't taken care of and were pieces of junk.

Some pawn shops may even have a tackle box or two that are full of baits. Those are usually a pretty good deal also.
