Cross Lake Bass Fishing Reports
« on: July 11, 2003, 12:32:52 PM »

This lake gets a lot of pressure since it is a close drive, along with the skiiers and jet skis it can be a really tough lake to fish...

Don't know....that would require staying around until the weigh-in is over.  From what I saw....which was not a lot...anybody that had fish only had one or two.  Sam weighed one over, better than 4.5 lbs.  Saw a few over and a few under.

We weighed one under....and that was the only bite I got.

Missed you last night.

Fished Cross this morning (Saturday) until about 10:30.  Caught 4 and 3 would have weighed.  Two under and one over....and caught one slot fish.  Three of the fish came on a spinnerbait (yeah, finally got bit on a spinnerbait) and the other came on a worm.  Could not get any top water bites.

I'll be back there tomorrow for a longer day.

Fished Cross today....until about 1:30.  Caught 5, all on spinnerbait.  Only 2 would weigh....one over and one under.  The others were a slot fish and two short fish.  Now I can't get a worm bite.

Going back tomorrow, but probably in the afternoon/evening.

Lots of fisherman on the water, prefishing for the Reeve's.

We fished Cross Lake today from sun up to about 11am.  Bass began schooling around 9 and schooled on and off for a couple hours.

Caught a nice fish in the slot (about 16 inches - 1.5 to 2 lbs) on a white spinner bait with a bronze Colorado blade.  If you look hard, you can find my bait as I lost it trying to cast with a semi-nest! ;D

Here is the fish:

Worms/lizards were working for us too all morning, but the fish were very small.  Big ones were hanging around the lily pads and cypress trees, but they didn't like what we had to offer them......oh well.

P.S. - Watch out for the Wasp nests in the trees.  They were as plentiful as snakes are on the river!

I have had the same problem in the areas I am fishing....lots of movement with the fish but they are not interested.  I have also see the wasp nests...tons of them.  Makes me a little nervous to go weaving in and out of the trees.

I am going see if I can find an afternoon/evening bite tomorrow to try and help with the Thursday evening tournaments.

Well, it was a typical afternoon/evening on Cross, at least for me.  Caught 2 fishing, one slot and one under....both on worms.  Could not get the spinnerbait to work.

Heading back in the morning and hopefully it will be better.

Mike,

You seem to be always talking about worms or spinnerbaits. Have you tried other techniques to improve your pattern. I.E. cranks, rattle traps, top water, jigs..... Just wondering if you have been force feeding them the the same ole thing or if you have tried other techniques to no eval....

Well, I have thrown buzzbaits, spooks, pop-r's, crankbaits, traps, flukes, and today I even threw a wobblehead.  I caught one spook fish yesterday morning (slot) and one crankbait fish this morning (short fish).  I have had two hits on a buzzbait and they were possibly gar.  Other than that, nothing has worked.  And as the week goes by, the fishing is getting tougher.  There have been quite a few fisherman on the water this week and from the ones I have talked to, the bite has been extremely tough.

I haven't fished the same water twice yet.  And I will keep moving around the rest of the week.

I'm going to take dynamite on Sunday.

Have you checked out the water inlet yet. It might be good for a limit of unders......

Mike, I will be spending the day or part of the day on the east side of the bridge, including the water inlet.

Weighed one under in the Thursday evening tournament.  Had a few decent weights.  9.6 won it, 9.56 was second.  Over 50 boats and only 27 boats weighed a fish.  One more tournament before the championship.  It looks like 33 teams will be the cutoff with 2 wildcards.  We are in it right now.

Glad to hear you are still in the running. Hope it isn't just like last year were you only need to catch one fish to stay in and then we don't

I have heard that they are keeping the water pumping this year to prevent the lake from getting low and needing it when the bayou is to low to take it. Hope it works for you....

I haven't seen the water pumping all this week, but I haven't specifically went looking.  I fished the rock levee along the railroad track this morning, including the water inlet, but nothing.  I did manage a couple of short fish on bridge pilings.

You know how last year you could pitch a worm "under" the big pipe at the inlet....well the water is so high this year that you can't do that.

I think I have a game plan for the Reeve's....cast until your arm hurts...and when you catch a fish, crank up and go somewhere else.

One more Thursday evening on Aug. 21 and the championship is Saturday, Aug. 23.

Sorry to bust your bubble Mr. Ranger....Triton ruled at the Reeve's....no Rangers in site.

Only 4 teams had double digit weight.  There were not many five fish limits.

AJ and Letterman won with only four fish.

Going to Cross either Saturday or Sunday or both.  Need to locate some fish for the Thursday evening tournament and hopefully for the Thursday evening tournament championship.

Any suggestions?

Yep, I found out that you can be led astray by those "Mike's".  Followed him on Sunday....one fish.  Fished in a lot of different areas, ones that I didn't fish in the Reeve's.  Did not find anything new so I guess its back to the same pattern as before.

Fished the Thursday evening tournament championship today on Cross.  It was a bit warm out there.  Those guys really did a great job with the championship.  Weigh-in was at the Shreveport Yacht Club.  After the fish were weighed, out came the food.  They fed us barbequed chicken, smoked sausage, baked beans, potato salad, and bread.  They also had all the beer and soft drinks you could want.  Travis donated quite a bit of stuff for places finished and for door prizes, along with some other folks.

There were 35 teams in the championship.  Claude and Marlon won it with over 16 pounds ($2000) and had big bass ($330).  A.J. and Jerry took second - over 10 pounds ($800) and Todd Jackson and his son took third - over 9 pounds ($420, I think).  Money was paid for the first 4 places and prizes for the next 8 places.  Fred and I managed 10th place.  Couldn't get any over the slot bites...had 4 unders.  We each got a rod.  They had a bunch of door prizes also.  I got a reel as a door prize to go with the rod.

They will be having these again next year starting the first or second Thursday after the time change in April.  There is a lot of money on the line in these tournaments.
