Your Favorite Lake In Wisconsin
« on: February 08, 2007, 12:06:55 AM »

I seen this topic in other states and its a fun topic.  Personally, my favorite lake is Mendota.  It has a fantastic smallmouth fishery.

My Favorite Lake is Clam Lake , just south east of the St Croix State park.  Is a nice uncrowded lake that I had the good fortune to spend some time on as a Teenager.   Good small/largemouth fishery.  There are actually 2 Clam Lakes, but I have never fished the more advertised of the two.

I think I'd have to say that my favorite lake in Wisconsin isn't even a lake.  My favorite body of water in the state is the Wisconsin River system.  There are several "lakes" in the area that are dammed up sections of the Wisconsin that are amazing fisheries.

Lake Mohawksin near Tomahawk cranks out amazing smallmouth and good muskies, Lake Alice has tremendous walleyes and Boom Lake here in Rhinelander has an overlooked bass fishery and some huge muskies!

Ah the Wisconsin river is a blast!! Those sturgeon are huge in there, though rare.  I grew up in Prairie du Chien and fished the Wisconsin and the Mississippi since where they meet is just south of there.

mississippi river at LaCrosse. been fishing it for years. great smallmouth and suprisingly outstanding largemouth. most locals are fishing for walleye or white bass. go into the backwaters and have some fun with 5 to 15lb northern pike. this section of the river is for some reason underfished, but thats why I love it.Seems like hot humid days in late july and early august produce some of the biggest largemouth. I've had days of 20 to 30 fish that went 3 to 6lbs. not bad for northern waters.

It's a long haul to Ashland Wisconsin, but worth the trip to fish the Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior.  This is simply Smallmouth heaven!  Managed to become a worldclass Smallmouth fishery, a 22" limit keeps the Smallies in the lake.  Locals are far more interested in the Walleye, Salmon and Trout and consider the Smallies a nuisance. It is truely an oustanding Smallmouth fishery!

It's only a two hour trip for me, but I agree, the Chequomegon Bay smallmouth fishery is tremendous.  I have caught more BIG smallies in one day on "the Bay" than any place else.  The only problem is that Chequomegon Bay is part of Lake Superior and we all know what happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald!

I have been scared more often on Chequomegon Bay than anywhere else in the world!   :shocking:

There's some HUGE pike in the Bay as well.

Steve

I wish it was a two hour drive for me, closer to six from the Milwaukee area.  I know what you mean about being scared on this body of water.  Conditions change quickly and can get real scary real fast.  But the smallies are worth the trip for me.  To think about all those Canadian bound fisherman that drive right past this fishery in search for Pike, Walleyes and Smallmouth in Canada is pretty amazing.  If they only knew!

Waiting for warm weather...

I'd love to fish Mendota sometime.  I've only fished a couple WI lakes; Lake Geneva(a long time ago), Green Lake, Elkhart, and Noquebay.  Green lake is pretty, very clear.  I only dock fished, no bass but a decent pike.

I'd really like to hit some of Wisconsin's rivers for smallie from a kayak, I usually only fish trout up there(FIB).

This summer get a chance to sneak a day off during the week and fish Lake Geneva.  With out all the crazy weekend boaters it is a great bass lake!

As a South Eastern Wisconsin Native I agree with Lake Geneva,  but my favorite will always be  Castle Rock Lake.

My favorite is a little lake way up north in Washburn County. Silver lake it is. Been going up there every year since I was two. You wont catch any giants, but the Northern and Largemouth make a two week stay a real nice time. Planning a trip to the Chippewa Flowage late October. Will the fishing be any good?

Hello
I thought i drop my 2 cents in on this, i love Castle Rock Lake, but it is a good 3 hr drive for me, Milwaukee river has some huge smallies in it, and when i show pictures to people they say but that river is polluted, Not, i have never seen this river this clear or as clear as a river in Wi gets and it is a 15 min drive for me. I also fish alot of the little lakes within a hr drive of me and have a nice 7 1/2 pound largemouth that came from one.
