sorry it has been so long for the report but been busy here the last few weeks. I will just give everyone the trends for the last weeks or so.
We have had  your typical Alabama weather here for the last two weeks which means 72 and sunny for 2 or 3 days then days like today 40's and pouring rain bad enough to drown a duck. The fish have been fairly stable for the last couple of weeks but still not sure when the will hold and become gaurdy over the beds. All fish clients and I have boated have been coming from skiny water in the backs of coves off senkos (dead sticking), Choo-Choo 3/4 oz spinnerbaits (slow rolling) and crankbaits. Colors are the normal (watermelon, green pumpkin, mint julip, and red). Fish are still being located near steep drops in 5-8 feet of water waiting to move up after the buck bass get everything ready for them. I did have a client boat a nice 7.25 last week in about 2 feet of water on a spinnerbait but she showed no signs of being ready for the spawn except looking like she had a softball in her gut.
The numbers here are small at best with the exception of one trip we had that boated 20 fish of that 09 keepers. the best five went just over 19 and change. The clients did fish a tournament the same weekend and one ended up with the win and the other got 3rd. Both were father/son so I guess the money went to the same place anyway.LOL.
I am hoping the weather will settle down and get the fish sticking to the bed hard the numbers and wieghts should come up to typical Guntersville sacks. I still have some open days in April and May but they are booking fast. Also be sure to check out my web site Laurie is getting the final touches on it this week. www.finsngrinsfishing.com thanks again to Laurie for all your hard work. Till next time be safe and hope to see you on the water.

Weather has put a halt to the action on my end of the lake...the fish were within inches of hittin' the beds, then this cold streak comes thru and shuts' em down.  Our winners had a 22.50lb bag.  They claim to have caught them in 25ft of water...

I was fishing water I have't been in since I was a kid...When the water comes up, I KNOW were Im headed. ;)

All of our fish came off spinnerbaits and cranks in 3-10 ft.  But the best fish I caught came out of less than 2ft of water behind a stump...

10 boats out of 11 brought fish in.  Me and my partner caught alot of fish, just not enough 15in'ers  lost several good fish.  We wouldnt have won, but we would have 2nd or 3rd...we could touch 22.5

Not sure how good this one is but it has been feast or famin on the big g for the last couple of weeks now. I have had several trips and have boated fish on all trips but not any real good typical big g bass size to them. I have found alot of fish in the mode to come up to the shallows and hit anything you toss at them but them the weather hits them and knocks them back on the ledge and they scatter. I have turned a couple of half day trips into full days getting the clients bit and looking for a stable pattern with some good results but, that  is guntersville. All fish resent have been in 1-6 feet of water on cranks, jigs, and spinnerbaits. I have had several on senkos but most of them are not keepers. I see the fish are starting to get a little more stable and move into the mode to spawn with the weater getting better as long as it will hold out. I have trips all this week and will post results as I can but I am finding the weekly reports are easier to post and keep up with and shows a better pattern for those of you who read them. If I can ever get the time to learn how to put a pic on here I will if anyone needs proof of a catch I will be happy to mail pics to you if you pm me with your addy.
On a serious note I would like to thank everyone on this board for being so nice and everyone helping each other out when they need it.  If anyone here ever needs anything from this area or some info just ask and I will assist you all I can. Hope to se you out on the water and remeber to take a kid fishing and pass along our great sport.

God Bless

Hey guys
I am new to the forum. I am a amatur angler and enjoy reading the post to see what is working on the Big G. I have been fishing on and off with my father-in-law for years but was asked by him to fish one of the little tornament in Guntsville. You guys may know him he is Garland Wharton. I have fish two times so far this year in the tournament. The first time out was on 3-11-06 we caught 3 fish. I pulled in the first with a rattle trap. Garland pulled in a five pounder with the same rattle trap. We went again on 3-25-06 we even got a new rattle trap the Excalibar but we had no luck with it.  That was right after the cold front came in. We didn't caught a thing and we froze are butts off. Hopefully next time out. We can pull in some big ones.

That cold front came in the sunday/monday before that weekend.  We had a small fun tourney two weeks before our USA BASSIN tourney.  In places, the water temps dropped as much as 10 deg...

The Rat-L-Trap bite we were on died...we caught all our fish on Spinnerbait...two weekends before the tourney, some guys caught fish on topwater.  I caught my first fish of the day on a Spit 'n Image!!!!  Water was 65-67 deg also.  Fast forward to 3-25, highest water temps I found were in the 52-55 range.  Obviously it didnt hurt one of our teams...they had a 22.5 lb bag.   Out of 11 boats, 10 weighed fish for a combined total of a little over 83lbs.

Come Back and fish more often!!!

Thanks for the reply. I talked to my father-in-law today he camps at Honeycomb and fishes that tourney on the first Saturday of the month. Again he and his partner had no luck. He said he talked to some guys and they caught fish off Pig N Jig so that is what we are going to try on next Saturday. I appreciate any feed back of what is working on Guntersville this week. thanks

Hey guys time for my weekly report on things at the BIG G. I have been covered up for the last couple of weeks but the fishing has turned on for the most part. Alot of fish are moving into the spawn mode and getting ready to lock on the beds. Some are females and alot of males on the beds right now. You can catch the spooky ones just remember proper tactics for bed fishing. "back off and work it slow they will bite". I think I have noticed alot of anglers in the past just "give up on it too soon" and move on to the next one. A client I had earlier this week learned that presistance pays off with a nice fish that took him 1 hour to catch. He told me he wanted to move to another spot but, I knew if I made him stay with it she would bite and she didnt let me down.
We have also noticed a change in the water levels here and it is also helping the bite. Fish are going to found in the 1-4 foot range with the best numbers coming from less than 2 feet. All fish have been boated on Choo-Choo Spinnerbaits in mint julip with a #3.5 colo, and #5 willow, Netbait Salt lick (dead sticking) in several colors (junebug, green pumpkin, watermelon, and blk/blue) using a 5/0 ewg gammy hook.
While fishing the bed fish please remember to take a quick pic and get them back in the water. I feel it is important to return them soon and let them give life to some more of those BIG G toads for our kids to catch. Have fun and be safe

God Bless

Well it's that time again. Time for the weekly update on the "big G"!! I can some it up in two words, It's Hot!!!!   I have had some great trips with super clients. Every trip has produced some typical Guntersville toads But the numbers bite has been good to my clients. Each trip has produced numbers over double digits with several fish over the 5lb class. I know this does not seam to be great but given how the year has been slow and the bite even slower 10+ fish a day is a good pick up from the last month.
The go to baits for us this week was the Tiki Stick rigged weightless with a 5/0 gammy hook and 17lb floro line. I have tried some new tactics while the clients fished which have also produced a couple of good bites. These include tossing the 10 inch ribbon tail rigged with a 1/8th oz bullet head swimming it just above the grass tops and my favorite the CRANKBAIT.. Toss it in there and roll it down to the grass and let it hang up, then just shake it till the fish knock it off for you.LOL I also have had good bites on the Choo-Choo mint Julip spinnerbait which has just been released for sale to the public. I used a 3/4 oz with a #5 single blade in gold.
Most colors were: (plastics) everything you throw at them, We tossed watermelon/red, blk/blue, green pumpkin, Mardi, Christmas tree and black.
Cranks were: "lake guntersville special" chart/blue back, red craw, Tenn. Shad
Spinnerbait: chart/wht, and mint julip both with gold blades.

I look for the bite to get better and the numbers and size to come together in the up coming weeks. Also the top water bite should be AWSOME in the next few weeks. As many of you know when the top water starts get out those flipping sticks and tie on the jig. Go to the main ledge and just start flipping grass. Just remember stay with it you could flip 3 miles before the bite but when you get one you can catch 10 in the same spot in a row.
I would also like to say thanks to everyone for the e-mails and referrals. Can't wait to see everyone at the Dale Hollow Rally and put a face with a name. Have a great time on the water and take a kid fishing. See you on the water soon.

God Bless.. Phil. 4:13

We went out Saturday from 7:00-12:00 am on the lower part of the lake. We fished shallow for a few hours with nothing. We droped back to around 3ft off the grass and caught 4 in a small amount of time. I had three and my cuz 1. They were on a spinnerbait and our FishBomb Shad (trap). The fish on the Shad where not taking the bait well and we had 2 come unbuttoned but the ones on the spinnerbait were sucking it in. 3 of the fish had not spawned yet with big ol belly's. Our 4 total was around 9.5 with the biggest at 3.75-4 lb. It was a great day on the lake,

Hey guys I fished today with no luck again. My father-in-law caught two small ones and I didn't have any big bites. My father-in-law said today that the fishing has changed in the last year or so. He said that Gunterville has been beat with fisherman. He also made a comment that he hasn't seen any real small bass in a while. He thinks maybe theres something wrong with the bass spawning or there not spawning well. He also said maybe there not active after spawning. Anyhow I would apprecate any tips. We tried Browns Creek where big bass are normally.

What time of day did you fish?  I fished Nickajack (next lake up) yesterday and after the rain quit, the bite did too...

The fish are there, just got to find them...

Thanks Tater for the reply.  We fished from 6 am to about 11:30 before we packed it up and went home. I don't get to fish as much as would like and lately have only fished the 2nd and 4th Saturday. I hope the more I fish, that I to start catching some fish. We fished spinnerbait ( Yellow) and fished silver, and Red Rat-L-Traps. We fished some Worms and lizards, and Jigs with very little luck. I had some hits on the Jig but not very aggressive. I could feel a pull but was able to set the hook on any.

Hootjm, the last time I was on Guntersville which was 3-25...I didn't get the first hit on a Rat-L-Trap.  That day I caught most of my fish on a white spinnerbait with nickle blades.

Now yesterday We started out fishing topwater with ZERO action at all.  We finally found out why...the fish are still on bed on Nickajack, its the next lake up so it stays with reason that the fish are still on be in Guntersville.  I can tell you this, when sun came out and all the clouds left, the FISHING SHUT DOWN for all my anglers.  16 anglers all agreed that when the sun came out, it was over.  I went deep, tried to catch suspended fish, nothing... There were several bass still shallow but they weren't biting.

tater how far did you go up the river at nickajack and where did you put in? I put in up at williams island and sometimes go down as far as the shellmounds area but it takes me bout 20 minutes to get down that far with my merc 50..If someone wants to fish the upper part of nickajack or chickamauga for that matter i can put you on some bass unless its one of those days where we've all been there and you cant catch anything..

It's that time of week again. Sorry for the late report but the sponsors, tournaments and trips have had me going from can till can't everyday. We have started to have some better fish stacking up on the main river ledges and open water humps in the mid lake section and on the lower end the fishing is everywhere. We have boated them by every tactic you can think, deep, shallow, topwater, and sight fishing. The numbers are not where they need to be this time of year but picking up. It seems like when the fish are starting to get stable another blast of cold north air hits and throws the bite off for me. I have had the bigger bites come from the mid to upper river on secondary points and open water grass lines. The swimming of big worms is getting slammed rigged with a 1/8th bullet head and 5/0 EWG hook. most have come on Junebug, and green Pumpkin.  I did try a jig bite for the first time in awhile with no takers except on docks in 4 feet of water, Black Pumpkin and Camo with either a black or green Pumpkin trailer doing the trick. On a trip last Monday the wind got up and a front was headed this way. I had some firsttimers for Guntersville on board and just not getting the bite we needed. I picked up a new bait from Jackall called Mask in a chart/green back (jerkbait) and got slammed. I then handed it to my client and watched him boat 6 fish in the next 20 mins. to end the day on a good note. The most consistant bite has come from the big worm and topwater worked slow over sumerged milfoil/Hydrilla beds.
Well that is about it for now but I will try to get some more info for you in the coming trips. Also I dont think I will make it for the Dale Hollow Rally. As bad as I hate it I have had several clients want trips that week and as you know I am doing this as a main source of income so cant turn them down right now. Hope everyone has a great time and be sure to stop on your way back thru and get on some "BIG G" toads. Feel free to give us a call anytime. See you on the water

So how has everyone been doing at Guntsville. We still haven't had any luck. I am so frustrated. I wasn't able to go with my father in law for one of the tournament. So another guy fished with him and he caught a three pound and my father in law caught 4 keepers and then add the three pounder. I keep telling him it must be me being the bad luck. Any tips on getting rid of the bad luck. I have fished every way I know how and have bought may new lures trying to caught fish. Any help or tips are appreciated. thanks

Don't feel bad...my trips haven't been as productive this year as in the past.  ~xyz   Don't give up on her yet, She can show her ugly side  :shocking: but some times she shows her good side  8)

Something I have learned on this lake Is not always presentation, but more location and presentation.  I hate to say it, but there is too much grass (SEE BELOW!!!).   An area will look bassy as all get out, not a fish in town.  Case in point this past Saturday I pull up on a strip of freshly topped out gunk.  There were fish in there, but no bass.  IF they were there, they wern't biting, but the gar were...whew.

Tell you what, give me a shout, via PM or Email and maybe we can get a trip up sometime or another.

Eric

Too Much Grass?
To me there is alot of grass which in this time of year, you could fish different areas all day and come up empty.  Some of the areas hold fish, others don't.  The grass statement came from the lack of Sleep, just over look that please.  I love the grass...  8)
