Jackplate step

Here's another tip for getting back in the boat after falling out or for the kids to use during a day of tubing. I saw these stainless steel steps mounted on the transom of another boat and it gave me the idea of putting it on the jackplate. I got this shipped to the door for $32. I just did a Google search for "folding step". West Marine also shows this in their catalog.

The Utility Semi-Trailer Company uses them to climb the front of the refeer trailers to Open the top vent.  They are very sturdy.

I let the kids jump out of the boat and go swim the other day.  I thought it was amazing how hard a time they had getting back into the boat. That's with a rope ladder over the side to help.  I'm convinced that if you have a lot of clothes on and no ladder you are in deep trouble if you fall into cold wather.

One tip I saw was that the easiest way to get back in the boat, especially if it is a large person, is to ride the motor up.  Get behind the motor then use the tilt button on the motor to tilt it up as far as possible.  Lifts you up on the motor then you can crawl up the motor to get in the boat.  This is assuming you have the tilt switch on the motor.
