chigger craws are all you need. I dont think the soft plastic is that important myself. Its a reaction strike you have to almost hit them in the head, but if you get a bite it probably will be a good one. PATIENCE is the key, you either gonna hero or zero. i got a tournament down there in mid sept. cant wait to punch that grass. Alot of people dont like punching the grass but l love it. Good luck let me know how you do.

Yeah we're going to give it a shot for a while on Saturday, we've got a Tx out of there. I prefer flipping wood but something tells me the winning bag is going to come from the grass. I've never fished the Potomac in the summer when the grass is heavy.

Don't know about up there, but we tore them up with a Karu Poison tail white jig this sunday,,,,,in the grass, didn't have to punch it through, swam it over the top.

Good luck on your tx,

On high tides, I used to burn a Rat-L-Trap across and sit back for monster slams, but going out and/ or low, nothing beats a frog. It's been a while since I've been down there, but look into the grass at the entrance of Mattawoman Creek.

How's the Zoom Horny Toad or a similar bait work for this?

Haven't tried it, but if it makes a big enough ruckuss, something should swim up to it and give it a taste. Sunday, I was down on the Sassafrass and threw a super salty fluke(white) and finally caught my first bass on one of them, rigged on a 3/0, no weight. I had it and a bunch of others sitting in the front of my tackle bag, mainly for breaking Rockfish and realized they were there. I'd try one of those too. Wish you luck down there.

Sweet, I think I've got all of them in my bag already. Also heard there was a good spinner and crankbait bite on the edges of the grass. Any thoughts?

 :help: :help: :help:
Also, any creeks producing more fish than the others? High tide is before 5 so the tide will be moving at launch. Wont have much time to go find a spot so I'm hoping to put together a game plan before then  :roll2:. That way we can run right to the spot and get fishin'  lo

I've had luck in the past, slow cranking parallel to the grass and the tips of laydowns. Also, with all the rain that we've had, watch out for the obstacle course trees that are floating. I hit one one time that I couldn't see and put a nice ding in my hull(aluminum)  ~xyz.

There are too many places down there to fish. Where you launching from?

Launching out of Smallwood. Plans were to fish the main river for a bit b/c my partner knows a spot north of Mattawoman that he did ok at during the SQT. Then we were going to make a run to some creeks and find some spots. With high tide being early we don't want to waste a bunch of time running so plans are changing.  ~read

The grass he wants to fish is between mattawoman and pamunkey. I've heard good things about Pohick, how is it this year? I'd hate to run north, then waste time running south to Chick or Aquia. If they're doing good now we may head straight there.

I rather fish hard cover than grass there is so much grass down there that its hard to know were to start I would find spots on the main river to throw frogs buzzbaits chatterbaits spinner bait then find some hard cover to fish.Senkos fished like flukes over grass works best for me if you want to fish grass you will find that punching grass i luck if this is your first time down there .you will see there are miles & miles of grass its like finding needle in a hay stack!

I'd much prefer to fish hard cover. I hate flipping grass for that same reason. I think it's much easier to target fish in laydowns than it is in grass. If we can find some hard cover, we'll fish it.

YOU WILL SEE HOW VAST IT IS I CANNOT SEE HOW YOU CAN TARGET BASS IN THERE UNLESS YOU HAVE SOME KIND OF IDEA THAT FISH ARE THERE! ITS CRAZY !SKEET REESE WON ON HARD COVER LOTS OF GUYS ZEROED ON GRASS & THEY ARE PROS IF TOP WATER IS NOT ON & YOU CANT' COVER WATER QUIKLY PUNCHING IS A WASTE ON TIME UNLESS YOU HAVE DONE IT BEFORE & HAVE SOME GOOD ISOLATED AREAS TO DO IT ON NOT GRASS THAT IS SEVERAL MILES ACROSS.

If you ever get the time, try out Nanjemoy, where Skeet said he fished. Turn right from the boat launch and hit all those trees at the right of the first left hand bend... If you like laydowns, that it the place. Then run to the back and fish that old sunken boat or bulkhead(suffer from C.R.S). Dang, I gotta get back down there.

Fish fast with a buzz frog covering a lot of the grass until you get a couple of blowups, then pick up that flipping rod and punch through those grassy areas that you got the blowups.  If there is more than one, there is usually a bunch...  Good luck

I won the Jr. Mr bass out there last fall by throwing a frog over the grass. Had about 10-15blows and just continued throwing the bait all day long. Also fished jigs on scattered clumps of milfoil. And threw cranks and spinnerbaits/chatterbaits on the outside egdes. Dont waste your time throwing the frog on the hydrilla its thicker and  They most likely will not bust through it. The grasses around the outside of mattowoman should produce some nice fish. Good luck.

Fished a club tourney there today. I ended up with second place with a 7-11 5 fish limit. Caught one on a horny toad this morning in the grass in mattawoman. Then caught 4 more throwing a crankbait along the edges. This was my first time there was kind of intimidating at first. It was choppy this morning would hate to be out there when it is windy. All in all a good day.
