best prop
« on: September 03, 2007, 03:24:23 PM »

Without checking each one on the engine, which prop considered to be the best one out there as far as top speed and hole shot :

4 blade SS 25P RAKER

4 blade SS 25P TEMPEST

4 blade SS 25P BALLISTIC

4 blade SS 25P RENEGADE

Each prop will be different on each boat. The real deal is who works the prop for you.  there is not a prop out there that doesn't need to be worked to the hull it is on.  ;)  Sounds like you have the new one proped fairly well right now.

Well, I'm happy with mine but talked to a few people at the ramp and got to prop/speed/hole shot argument and I said look, it will be different depends on the motor, hp and boat lenght and stuff, that one guy was like "I always use Tempest or Raker and they are the best no matter what engine you put them on".......

I don't know much about ballistics but they do look fast sitting on the trailer.  :o

Jdaddy.....the Raker and the Tempest are 3 blade props and I am pretty sure Ballistsic doesnt make a 3 blade as well. The Renegade is a 4 blade. As far as being the best prop it all depends on your rig.

Normally a 3 blade is going to be 1-3 mph faster, but that is not true on all boats.  Robbie has had alot of time setting up legends and says the 26p trophy plus is the fastest on the 21le 225 proxs setup.  ;)

Looks like ya'll have it covered. Every boat/motor combo will need something different. There is no one miracle prop out there yet. On Jdaddy's boat a 3 blade will probably work better. The merc props will interchange easily on the Yamaha.

Thanks Robbie,
Let me add and ask you another question.
The prop I got right now is Ballistic 4 blade - i honestly don't know the pitch, I assume 26.
I run about 70mph on 5600 rpm's with about 18-20psi water.
What do you think a 3 blade prop like a 27P tempest will do on my motor/speed/rpm ? ( merc 225 efi).

Also I have a jack plate and looks like it was already set by the previous owner - I'm not sure how low under pad, i need to check that tomorrow.

JDaddy, when you have really got her skinned back and trimmed out How does your rooster tail look?  Height and eveness?

What is your max rpm at WOT?

I think on that stratos you should be setting around 2.25 in under pad with the 4 blade.

Also if you drop to a 3 blade your speed will increase a couple MPH but the chine walk will generally get worse.  ;)

I don't have any rooster tail in any speed, at least nothing over my cowling.
I just leveled the trailer/boat out and measured the distance from the bottom of the pad on the very rear to the ground, 14.5 inches, i then measured the distance from the center of the prop shaft to the ground and it was 11.5 when the engine is vertical to the boat, so it looks like it set for 3" right???

I would go to the water and play with it. 2.75 to 2.5 is where I would bet you get the most out of it .   It should have less wheel torque and be easier to drive when you come up some on it.  ;)

My buddy done best with his Triton setup at 2.25" below the pad rolling a Tempest with 2 vent plugs pulled for holeshot. With the heavier hulls you have to make sure your prop has enough cupping to ensure propper lift. If your prop does not have enough lift than you will never see what you want to see.

The Tempest should put the boat in the low 70's. We usually see 72-74 on your boat/motor combo when we set them up.
