Lady's rod and reel
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:40:44 PM »

I posted this question in another board, but I wanted to ask you girls for your advise.

I am wanting to buy my wife a rod/reel combo designed for smaller hands.
She sometimes fishes with me and she uses my rods and complains that her hand and arms are hurting.

Please help.

Our tournament sponsor FishHer actually has a baitcast and a spincast rod designed specifically for the female angler. They are lightweight and the handle has a smaller grip. At this time she doesn't offer a combo. but she is working on that. Most of the the reel manufacturers offer low profile reels that work well with the FishHer rods. The rods also come in a lovely lavendar color that women like.

I have been tournament fishing for 17 years and learned to fish on all the bulky and heavy equipment that was designed by men...for men. Manufacturers are starting to take notice as 33% of all anglers are women. New rod and reel designs are starting to enter the market that are female friendly.

I personally like the Shimano Curados but I am dying to buy the Abu Garcia "Revo". They make one that weighs only 6.35 oz. Most all the low-profile reels are going to be pricey.

These are just my opinions..for what they are worth! :)

FishHer only makes lavender rods and most of her tackle products are lavender as well. They are very "stylish" and women like FishHer products because they feel like they have their own identity.

If this other person is determined to have a "pink" rod...Ocean Girl makes one I think.

Check with Bass  Pro Shops They carry a line of spinning as well as closed face rod and reel combos made by shaskespeare that the ladys seem to like as well as they have a few nice tackel boxes that are pink and purple color. and i think that a donation is made to breast cancer research from each purchase of the combos .

Hey Linda, if you get a chance to try the Revo's, do it. You will love the light weight as well as the small profile. I have two Revo STX's. I will soon phase out all my others with the revo's.

Might be a bit late with this one but I just picked up a Falcon Lowrider Open Hook and Shimano Sahara 750 for my wife.  We went fishing sunday and she loved it and I honestly really liked it too.  It's really light and with 15lb braid it should be able to handle any situation she encounters.

I have fished for year but hate a baitcaster.  If she hasn't fished much I would get her a spinning reel, baitcasters backlash too much

Yep, my wife doesn't fish as often as me, so the spinning rod I got her will meet all of her needs.

I'm a new member and saw this thread and would like to give this person a bit of advice.

I have nothing against any other rod/reel I wanted something I knew my partner (who is also my father) wouldn't steal!  lo  ::) Anyway I looked at the Lady Shakespeare I found that the reel is very poorly done. Almost all the ones I tried in both Dick's and Bass Pro Shop had either a very loose handle or the handle was broke all together. I then looked at the Lady PFluger, the reel (and I went through them just to make sure) was in great condition I only found like maybe 2 where broke where someone must have been hard on it. I did purchase it, it cast great, you can feel the bites and it reels in the fish without a problem. I highly recommend this rod. I have used it over a dozen of times and it has held it's own. I would definatly buy anther one!  ~cf

A few years ago, before the Shimano Chronarch Mg was available in the US I bought two Shimano Scorpion MG 1000 directly from a dealer in Japan. That Japanese version is identical to the US version with one notable exception, the reel handles are a bit smaller to suit Japanese hands better.

I mention it because you may want to search Japanese Tackle Dealers and see what they currently have to offer.
Just a thought.  :-*

I hope it helps.

We went with an OceanGirl rod, 6'6".  She has only used it a few times, but she loves it, mainly because it's pink and it's hers  ;D

I think it's a great idea that some manufacturers are finally targeting the ladies with equipment designed for them in colors they would like. I bought my Daughter the Lady Trion spinning reel from Pflueger. It seams to be a very good quality reel.  She uses it on the pink ugly stick spinning rod. I thought that would be a good choice for her as she likes to fish for bass and catfish or anything that will bite, The ugly stick seems to be durable enough for cats and sensitive enough for bass and panfish.

I noticed  that St Croix now makes a Avid Pearl for Lady Anglers.

Here is the description.  The most advanced rods ever developed for women who take their tackle as seriously as their fishing. Featuring a gorgeous, fuschia-metallic finish, the high-modulus SCIII graphite blanks incorporate St. Croix’s proprietary IPC® technology. Lightweight and sensitive, each rod is a highly specialized, technique- and species-specific fishing tool. Topped off with Alps® zirconium guides, Fuji® reel seats, split-grip cork handles and slim-profile ferrules, Avid Pearl rods are ready for just about anything – including kicking some gentlemen bass anglers’ butts.

6 spinning models and 4 casting models and I really like the Avid line, so if you looking for lady tackle, consider these.... Still looking at almost 200.00 per rod... but not one of them weighs more that 4.4 ozs....

If I wasn't worried about my manliness I might consider a Lavendar rod......  Sorry, fuschia Metallic.....

WOW. didnt know St. Croix made a ladies rod.  My boyfriend has a couple of Mojo Rods and he loves them. I was thinking about getting a couple of them myself.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to check them out.

I'm aware this is a very old topic, but it's still front page and I figured it would be best to just add to it than to start a new one.

My wife found a good deal on a St. Croix Avid Pearl the other day at a local tackle shop.  She'd previously asked Cabela's to bring one into the store on a no-commitment basis to look it over, but since this one was right there (and we got a deal), we grabbed it.

7' Medium Power, Fast Action 1 piece spinning rod.

Now it's her rod, and I haven't used it, so take this review for what it's worth, but I have to say I'm almost tempted to sneak out with it if it wouldn't mean certain death :) We both really like the handle design - the cork is broken into a few parts, but there's actually enough to grab onto above/with the reel as opposed to the Mojo that seems to want you to only hold below it.

She'd previously been using a few different 7' rods (A few year old BPS XPS IM8 something in NY, and an Ugly Stick combo in CT), and I've noticed her casts are much, much better with this setup.  I'm not sure of the power/action of the others, so that could have something to do with it, but I believe they are rated nearly the same.

It seemed to handle a decent fish pretty well, too:

It's really too early to completely back the rod, but she's very happy with it so far, and it does seem to be a quality product.  If you want to get a nice present for your favorite lady angler, I'd suggest considering the Avid Pearl.

Carolina Linda

isn't the Curado '50' mg also a bit smaller than the Curado E's?  And if paired with a Cumara...might be an option as far as baitcasting...
Cabelas also has a model, the 'mag touch' that has smaller diameter handles...now, they also don't have cork grips or anything...so if your wife's hands hurt from some of the 'ridges' that occur on some of those 'down locking' foregrips (I've had that problem after a couple days)...then a rod like the Cabelas XML with a real comfortable reel seat might be in order...

I'm assuming your wife's hands hurt from having to hold too large a reel?  Or is it that the shape/design of the rod/reel seat is driving some of this too?
