I posted this question in another board, but I wanted to ask you girls for your advise.

I am wanting to buy my wife a rod/reel combo designed for smaller hands.
She sometimes fishes with me and she uses my rods and complains that her hand and arms are hurting.

Please help.

Our tournament sponsor FishHer actually has a baitcast and a spincast rod designed specifically for the female angler. They are lightweight and the handle has a smaller grip. At this time she doesn't offer a combo. but she is working on that. Most of the the reel manufacturers offer low profile reels that work well with the FishHer rods. The rods also come in a lovely lavendar color that women like.

I have been tournament fishing for 17 years and learned to fish on all the bulky and heavy equipment that was designed by men...for men. Manufacturers are starting to take notice as 33% of all anglers are women. New rod and reel designs are starting to enter the market that are female friendly.

I personally like the Shimano Curados but I am dying to buy the Abu Garcia "Revo". They make one that weighs only 6.35 oz. Most all the low-profile reels are going to be pricey.

These are just my opinions..for what they are worth! Smiley

FishHer only makes lavender rods and most of her tackle products are lavender as well. They are very "stylish" and women like FishHer products because they feel like they have their own identity.

If this other person is determined to have a "pink" rod...Ocean Girl makes one I think.

Check with Bass  Pro Shops They carry a line of spinning as well as closed face rod and reel combos made by shaskespeare that the ladys seem to like as well as they have a few nice tackel boxes that are pink and purple color. and i think that a donation is made to breast cancer research from each purchase of the combos .

Hey Linda, if you get a chance to try the Revo's, do it. You will love the light weight as well as the small profile. I have two Revo STX's. I will soon phase out all my others with the revo's.

Might be a bit late with this one but I just picked up a Falcon Lowrider Open Hook and Shimano Sahara 750 for my wife.  We went fishing sunday and she loved it and I honestly really liked it too.  It's really light and with 15lb braid it should be able to handle any situation she encounters.

I have fished for year but hate a baitcaster.  If she hasn't fished much I would get her a spinning reel, baitcasters backlash too much

Yep, my wife doesn't fish as often as me, so the spinning rod I got her will meet all of her needs.

I'm a new member and saw this thread and would like to give this person a bit of advice.

I have nothing against any other rod/reel I wanted something I knew my partner (who is also my father) wouldn't steal!  Laugh  Roll Eyes Anyway I looked at the Lady Shakespeare I found that the reel is very poorly done. Almost all the ones I tried in both Dick's and Bass Pro Shop had either a very loose handle or the handle was broke all together. I then looked at the Lady PFluger, the reel (and I went through them just to make sure) was in great condition I only found like maybe 2 where broke where someone must have been hard on it. I did purchase it, it cast great, you can feel the bites and it reels in the fish without a problem. I highly recommend this rod. I have used it over a dozen of times and it has held it's own. I would definatly buy anther one!  Cool Fishin'

A few years ago, before the Shimano Chronarch Mg was available in the US I bought two Shimano Scorpion MG 1000 directly from a dealer in Japan. That Japanese version is identical to the US version with one notable exception, the reel handles are a bit smaller to suit Japanese hands better.

I mention it because you may want to search Japanese Tackle Dealers and see what they currently have to offer.
Just a thought.  I have an Idea!

I hope it helps.

We went with an OceanGirl rod, 6'6".  She has only used it a few times, but she loves it, mainly because it's pink and it's hers  Grin

I think it's a great idea that some manufacturers are finally targeting the ladies with equipment designed for them in colors they would like. I bought my Daughter the Lady Trion spinning reel from Pflueger. It seams to be a very good quality reel.  She uses it on the pink ugly stick spinning rod. I thought that would be a good choice for her as she likes to fish for bass and catfish or anything that will bite, The ugly stick seems to be durable enough for cats and sensitive enough for bass and panfish.
