need some help from you northern guys please
« on: November 20, 2008, 04:53:38 PM »

I have the last tournament of the year coming up in Maryland.  Its in a local reservoir.  Anything but a last place gives me a win for the club champ at years end and a few $$$$$$.

Its as cold right now as I can ever remember.  Im talking 27-29 degrees in the morning and 37ish in the afternoon.  Water temps on the lake I would imagine being around 45 give or take.  Grass should be dead, I think.  Lake is primarily clear to little color.  Last year it was still 60 degrees.

This is my question:

Where would you normally go on a lake that you fish if it was this cold?   Would you go north to running water?  South where the water heads toward the dam?  What would you fish in these conditions?  The lake has some nice points, deep water structure, lots of grass when its not dead, rocks etc...

Three weeks ago it was much warmer and I was catching them on jigs, slow rolling spinner, shakey heads and a crankbait here and there but the water temp was in the low to mid 50's.

Normally I wouldnt be asking but the weather has had a severe turn for winter in the last 3 weeks and I havent been out to find them.  Truth be told I wouldnt be out here fishing the club tourney if I didnt have a very good chance of winning it all.

I appreciate all advice and I will certainly let you know how I do.

Clarker  i would bet the grass is still alive cause the weather has changed so quick [atleast in ohio] im gonna say prefish it and see if you cant snag some grass on a deep crank or jig to find out-- In my bassmaster this month KVD has a great read on cold water mainly he uses spinnerbaits with big blades--
Well what ever you try my your 1 bag equal 5 fish at the end of the day

I would head to moving water if there is any on that lake, most bass are going to be slow moving and will look for the food to come to them. In Michigan we do not have reservoirs so You will need to get some of the ohio guys for reservoir fishing.
