Considering a i-class 20 Skeeter
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:52:30 AM »

I am hopefully buying a new bass boat during the next year or sooner.  I went to my local dealership planning only to look at the BassCat Puma FTD /Cougar FTD because of their 5 star JD Power rating for 5 years in a row.  I decided just to glance at the Skeeter i-class 20.  I loved all the storage (tons more than the Puma FTD), flush locks, better carpet and more comfortable seats.  I now am seriously considering the Skeeter, Bass Cat and maybe a Champion.  The Skeeter wins hands down on comfort.  The salesman tells me it is easier to handle at high speeds.   I have never owned a high performance bass boat (just Aluminum 17 ft and Saltwater cuddy cabin 20 ft).  Could I learn to drive, put on the trailer and fish from the Skeeter easily?  I am worried about chine walking on the Bass Cat but don't know if the Skeeter i-class has any problems with that.  The only negatives I have read online is the E-Z loader trailer.  Some people say they are awful and rust quickly.  I am also unsure about the poor JD Power rates for Skeeter (3 overall, 3 quality and 2 fishing) and the company being a corporation not family owned.  I would really appreciate everyones input.  Thank you! :)

I absolutely love my skeeter boat (2006 ZX190 w/ 150 yamaha).  My tournament partner has a 1 yr old Triton that we fish in sometimes, and I would not trade for nuthin.  Don't get me wrong, his Triton is a good boat, but there are some things that I just like better about the skeeter, storage, handling etc.  And I have not had any problems at all with loading, no chine walk, trailer rust or anything you are concerned about.  Everyone is going to have an opinion, and there are a lot of good boats out there.  Basscat, Triton, Champion are all excellent fishing boats and you will most probably be happy with any or all of them.  But my personal preference is definitely Skeeter.  Good luck with your selection process.

If you're looking for a good buy in a big 07 Skeeter with a 225 Yahmaha, there's one setting down at Bainbridge Ga along hy 82 at the Skeeter dealers. It's got 54 hrs on it for under 30,000. Saw it there last week. Clean as a pin.

Went for my i-class 21 foot test ride yesterday.  I was impressed!!!  We got up over 70 mph with 3 adults and full tank of gas, did right/left 90 degree turns at high speeds and stop with trim up and down.  The correct stop was no backwash and the incorrect stop was maybe 3 inches of backwash.  All 3 adults jump on one side and we still could not really tilt the boat.  I am suppose to have my BassCat test ride next week and I have added a Legend 211 Alpha test ride too.  After those rides I will make the decision!

Thanks to everyone for all the help!

All of these boats you are considering are great!  I have ridden in all of them.  Obviously I have a preference for the iClass.  I really like the amount of storage and the electronic locks as well as the alarm system.  I fish Toledo Bend and there have been a rash of thefts out of boats.  I feel much better when I am at the hotel knowing I have an alarm to protect my gear.
Then there is the ride...you have experienced it.  With two people you can hit 75mph.  Fast enough to make you cheeks flap  ;D.  The most impressive feature though is the stability.  Stability is Safety.  Especially if you intend to fish some of the larger reservoirs and river systems.  This winter my iClass handled 5 footers (although my back didn't).  I fully reccomend the Skeeter iClass.  Congrats on whatever boat you buy, I am sure you will enjoy it.

The I-Class is a great boat, handles top notch and speed is always there if you need it,But I do agree on the ez-loader trailer, mine has sqeeked since new and rattles like crazy, its almost embarrasing to pull up to the launch. Good luck on your purchase

I became a Skeeter fan from their customer service.  I am on my 2nd Skeeter, zx250 250hpdi and have enjoyed it.  It ran out of warranty last year.  Few weeks ago, my entire power panel went out.  My dealer called Skeeter and they replaced it under warranty....Think they had a recall on the power panel, but they were top notch about it.  I also had a disagreement with them regarding a promo they ran when I bought my boat w/ a free lcx15.  The boat arrived after the promo ran out, but was ordered several months before it ended.

I called their cs mgr, he sent me the gps/graph, a few skeeter hats, shirts, etc.  They have always been first class.  Not to mention my dealer is the best eng mech this side of the Mississippi (imho), and they take care of me as well.

In short, any of the boats mentioned are top notch...But, keep in mind, service after the sale with whatever dealer you are working with....They will all have a few kinks from time to time.  BTW..That I class is one smooth baby.

I know of one for sale in SE MO. It's a 2008 ZX225 that's loaded for around $34500 last time I looked. PM if you want his number or email I think I've still got it.

I bought a 2007 ZX200, 200 V-Max, and it is a great boat.  I had a Ranger previously and would have bought another, but couldn't pass up the deal I got on this one.  It handles rough water great and is an all around great ride.

I have a buddy that has a bass cat cougar the boat chine walks bad and I mean scary bad. Another bud has a legend 19'6" foot really nice boat good ride very little chine walk. I have a skeeter zx200 with a Yamaha 200 hpdi runs about 70 mph no chine walk what so ever drie smooth ride I love the skeeter boat I test rode in a i class really nice boat but more than I wanted to spend for a boat. Champion and ranger aint do to hot right now cause of the economy. Skeeter u dont have to worry about they owned by Yamaha and we all know is settin good they deal with more than just boat motors.

They've replaced both of my axles. The torsion axle can and does fail. When it does it sends the tire up into the fender. The first one failed while at a tournament on Okeechobee which is 12 hours away from home for me. They led me to believe they were shipping the axle ASAP. It took 2 weeks. Long story short, the EZ loader trailer is why my next boat won't be a Skeeter. Sad too, because I have an 08 21i and it's a great boat.

I had $1800 of stump damage to my 1996 Skeeter and it was 3-4 years out of warranty.  I took my boat to Skeeter and Darby came outside and was impressed at how well my boat looked due to its age and covered the cost of the repair. That is customer service and I would not worry about Yamaha owning the company.  Other boat companies are going out of busy due to the economy and Skeeter is going strong.  My Easyloader trailor is not a channel iron"boxed" trailor and it has been great.  I think poor drainage may be the issue with the rust problem on the boxed frame trailors.  I have never had a trailor that tires wear so even on.  I'm only on my second set of tires since 1995 when I bought my boat.
