Help on brakes locking up
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:15:20 PM »

I've got an 05 Skeeter tandem axle trailer with disc brakes.  The left side is locking up in reverse. It's not everytime I back up, just once in a while.  Any help or suggestions would help.

Just an idea, check your trailer wiring.  Must be hooked up and have a good connection to be able to back trailer up or the brakes will lock in reverse.

Your trailer has surge brakes when you back up the tongue slides back and engages your brakes your dealer should have given you a lock to put on the tongue so when u back up they wont lock up or u can put a small nut in there that works also.

The trailer has surge brakes but if only one side is locking up it seems to me that the lines to the individual brake side is clogged or the individual wheel cylinder is fouled up. If the other side is not locking up that is where I would start. It should be between the surge cylinder ( in the tongue of the trailer) and the wheel. You should probably check electrical from the tow vehicle and the surge components in the trailer as a precaution. I would hate for a malfunction to occur on the way to a TX or trying to back into the lake. The brake system works just like brakes on a car. The tongue acts like the brake pedal. When the tow vehicle slows the tongue is pushed back which the surge cylinder pushes fluid to the wheel cylinders that apply the brakes.  When backing, the tow vehicle wiring energizes a solenoid with the revers light power to bypass the tongue surge cylinder. There is a small override key (or nut) that you can put in the tongue to manually override but it is for temporary use.

If too much, bring to DeKalb, TX and I will help you out with it.  NO CHARGE. Just like helping my fellow fisherman.

I had the problem, but both sides were locking up every time I tried to back up.  MY salesman forgot to give me the little key that that fits in the slot on the side of the tongue, and he had to bring me one so I could back it in the driveway.  It turned out to be a bad solenoid that disables the brakes when the backup lights are on.  You may be having the same problem, and the side that is not locking up has another problem with the brakes.  Does that make sense to you?

Makes sense, but my problem was the trailer connector plug that plugs into the truck was loose and not making contact on the back-up lights.  Thanks for the suggestion.

You might check to see if both left and right brakes are working.  If your backup lights weren't coming on I believe both sides should have been locking up and not just one.

Yowsa... that would be bad to find out only one side is braking during an emergency stop.
