Holt Lake 5/25/09
« on: May 25, 2009, 10:37:02 PM »

Fished Holt this afternoon from 4 until 8:30 and caught 17 but they didn't have much size to them.  We caught every one of the fish on a shaky head from 10 to 15 ft of water on gradually sloping sandy or clay ledges.  I threw a crankbait and spinnerbait a pretty good bit and didn't catch anything but a stripe.  The fish were biting great but we just couldn't find the big ones.  I was going to try some topwater late this evening but didn't because the worm bite was too good to set it down.

Has anyone had any luck on crankbaits or spinnerbaits the past week on Holt?  I threw a series 4 & 5 strike king sexy shad and also an 8ft. diving chartreuse/blue bandit.  I also threw a 3/8oz. war eagle chartreuse/white spinnerbait.  I am not having any luck with these baits and it is really frustrating because these are usually my go-to-baits.  So, does anyone have any tips they could give me? :-\

Have never fished Holt - sounds like a great place to fish.  So the Sexy Shad isn't working?  Have you tried a couple of other colors - do the bass feed at all on crawdads there?

Yes, the bass do feed on crawdads here.  That's the only thing I haven't tried to do is match the color of the crawdads.  The other reason they are not hitting cranks may be because they have plenty of shad to eat.  I have just been trying to match the color of the shad.

SexyShad this probably doesn't help... but we have experienced the same thing fishing at the Tombigbee...

We haven't been able to get to Holt the past month but hope to go sometime soon, however, ....

While fishing the Tombigbee we couldn't get any bites on spinnerbait (we tried firetiger, Chart/white/ and just Chart all with Willows, Colorodo, painted blades, gold and silver blades)  ... nothing!!!  Crankbaits we tried Dt-10 in Bluegill and Firetiger and we only caught a little one pounder on the firetiger once... then nothing!  I caught a few one to one&Half pounders on chrome/black back and just chrome Rat-L-Traps (regular and One Knocker).  Most our fish just like yours came on texas rigged weighted senkos and baby brush hogs.  I caught small ones on brush hogs but on black/blue flake and solid black senkos we caught 2 ½ and 3 lbers.  But for most of the time just little guys.  So we are running into the same thing you are.  Let us know if you figure it out.  What's with the no spinnerbait bite?  Have you tried topwater?  We did a little bit but got nothing but topwaters aren't our confidence baits.  Keep us posted!!!  Thanks for the information!!!
