Is 40lb thrust enough.......please help me out
« on: July 11, 2009, 06:15:30 PM »

I have a 14' glasstream fiberglass boat with a 40 lb motorguide trolling motor...we usually have just two of us fishing from it....there was a 50hp outboard on but removed in hoping to get a little more speed from the trolling motor....I mean we feel like we a barely moving...

A 40 lb. trolling motor on a 14' jonboat would probably be all right.  A 40 lb. tm on a GlassStream boat is underpowered.  GlassStreams were never known as a lightweight boat.

I'd suggest trying at least a 54 lb. motor.  Then you wouldn't need to remove the outboard either and it would still move the boat just fine.

hey thanks alot, we thought maybe because the motor was older it was losing power,,but how much of an increase in power would a 54 give me....

LOL, I could be a smart-A$$ and say "14 more pounds" but that doesn't really help.  Believe me, a 54 lb. thrust in comparison to a 40 will seem like night and day.

If money weren't a consideration, I'd tell you to go to a 65 lb. thrust, 24 volt motor.  Then you could go days without having to charge the batteries if you needed to.

what Steve said...I have a 16 foot aluminum boat...72" beam...started out with a 54lb 12-volt system...would start losing power after the first 4 hours...

changed out to a 65lb thrust 24 volt system...can go two hard days and not recharge...lots of folks think this is too much power for that small a boat...trust me, I want it when the KS/MO/NE winds start whipping around...I can get on small enough lakes that the waves aren't an issue...but the wind still wants to blow the boat around...

Get as much as you can afford...but if the choice is more power OR more voltage...go higher on the voltage...

Yes, going up to a 24 volt system is huge.  You will be very glad you did, it just can push the boat faster without draining batteries.  Instead of running in wind at 60-100% of the power, you can run it at 10-40% power.  This makes a world of difference...

A 24 volt system is the way to go, and the modifications are not that hard  8)
