question about champion
« on: July 12, 2009, 11:58:42 AM »

the thing i dont like about most bass boats is too small rear deck. now i was lookig at the 183cx on champions website and it appeared to have a bigger rear deck. is this the case? also, is this the only champion model with the bigger rear deck? i fish with my wife most of the time and i think this will be the perfect boat for us. thanks

That will be an awesome boat and you and your wife will really appreciate the nice ride in the 183.  the 183 has a rear casting deck of 19sq ft.  The 190 and 198 also have a 19 sq ft casting deck and once you get up to the 202, 206 and 210 it becomes a 20 sq ft casting deck.

It was right on the champion website.  ;D  Under the specifications.  As far as finding out on older boats I'm not really sure.  You might try something like bassboatcentral and post it under champion forum.  There are 100's of champ owners there with all models and they can tell you more.

I have a 93 champion 180 and I love it.  it has a great ride and fishes really nice.  I'm hoping that next year I will be able to purchase a newer and bigger champ.

Stew6371 i myself have been loking for another Champion boat. I had a  1994 190scx elite that i had to let go about 7 months ago  :( ,,I cant say one thing bad about it i loved that boat!!! The ride and DRY ride is AWESOME!!! Iam finding it hard to find any older than 2007 seems like people hang on to them and i understand why. My 190 handled like it was on a rail !! And also was just wonderful in rough water. I posted in the ads here on UB and have gotten a lead on a 2001 THANKS to another member of UB!!! I got my 190 in 03 from a guide on Eufaula that fished out of it allmost everyday from new only thing was wrong it had a few small stress cracks and i mean small ones in the gel coat. As for the decks both had lots of space for both people and gear.

Thank you.  There isn't really anything to look for in the older champs other than the normal boat issues.  I will you give you alittle insight though on the older boats.  they were made in Mt home arkansas and at the time they had the gas tanks in the back and they were alittle narrower.  They were faster and rode amazing, but they were a little tipsier than the newer ones.  In 2002 Genmar started making them wider and moved the gas tank to the middle.  They still ride great, but are slower than some of the older models, but they are more stable and have more rear storage than then the older ones.

i notice that they dont appear to have transom issues as often as other boats. I thought the older ones looked a little narrow. That is what sucks. i may not be able to afford a newer one, and the older ones dont have all that i like about the newer ones.

they are a little narrower, but mine is pretty stable.  if you find 1 from about 2000 up they will have more storage in the rear.  Mine has none.  i have gas tank, batteries in the very back compartnment and 2 lids for my livewell that go basically all the way across.  Gostafish has a 97 202 and it has 2 tiny storage compartments in the rear.  my buddy has a 2001 187 and it is very stable, rides great and it has a square gas tank in the back instead of the wrap around and more storage in the back.  Its setup alot easier and its really easy to access the bilge area, where in mine i have to pull all the batteries out.

i will probably looking at used ones. went to local dealer today and looked at a new 183cx with a merc 150 prox6, lowrance 520c on the dash, and a 71 lb tm. price was 33,500. i thought it was a little high.

Go to bass boat central to find a good deal on a new Champ.   They have some nice boats for cheap.   I love my 187 DCX 2003.  Awesome boat.  My only gripe is the rear storage.  Ride like a dream.
