Cranking battery issue.
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:10:07 AM »

I had to buy anew cranking battery this year .So I went to Sam's and got a Optima . To or three times know I have gone to use it and its dead .
My question is what else does the cranking Batt. run. I have made sure everything else is off. Yet when I went to trim up the motor yesterday in the driveway the Bart. was dead

Any thoughts?

Groma what year is your boat? Most year models when everything is off, the only thing running is the clock and temp gauge on the front dash. I don't remember what year they started putting those in. Also if you have the new digital control panel, started late 08 there is a three hour time limit where everything shuts off with no use?

Legends are wired so that the only thing running off the trolling motor batterys is the trolling motor, so if it's on and not the trolling motor then the power is coming from your cranking battery.

To me it sounds like you may have got a bad battery. A parts house will do a load test on it for free! Sam's may also!

Groma, on most boats the cranking battery runs everything but the trolling motor. There should be a main switch somewhere, mine is in the battery compartment, that you can turn off when not in use. That way you can be sure everything is cut off.

Groma, I'm not sure if your 05 has the main bus circuit breaker on the right side by the oil tank or not, if so you can push that red button and kill everthing from your Cranking battery, just like pawpaw said. When your ready to use it again, just flip the little arm under that button and your ready to go.

Also, do you keep it plugged in all the time when not in use? If so, there may be something wrong with your charger.

Do you have a built in battery charger?  Like Russ said, you could have something wrong with your charger.  I had a 4 bank charger on my first Legend and one of my trolling motor batteries went dead after just a few months of use.  I got a new battery and it went dead also.  I got to checking and found that one of the banks in my charger was not working.  The lights were on, but that particular bank was not sending a charge to the battery.

My Legend is a 2005. It do have the clock in the bow panel. I don't believe it has a shutoff on it but I'll look again.
My battery charger is only three bank and that only takes care of my trolling motor batteries. I did pull the cranking battery out last night and it did take a full charge. I guess I will let it set for a couple days and keep checking the battery indicator on the digital gauge.

I'll keep you'll posted. I may pull it and have Sam's check it. Their good about no hassle exchanges.

Thanks guys

Not sure about how the main is wired on the '05 but make sure you don't have any compartment lights on. Sounds like something is loading down the battery.

Sorry I didn't see the year in your siggy. You won't be able to turn off the clock unless you find the right circuit breaker. Your boat has individual circuit breakers, if your battery continues to check good; you can pull each breaker one at a time and see what happens. The clock isn't going to draw the battery down over a year much less two weeks.

Groma, one more thing to check. Before I got my Legend I had a triton with a Rude and I started having the very same problem you are having.  It turned out to be a bad diode on the motor or alternator I can't remember which. Any way it would kill the cranking battery in a matter of hours. Once I got it changed I never had another problem.

I put a full charge on it last week and had it out on Sat. Just checked it a little while ago and It's at 12.7 volts. So its down a volt and a half.
I'll be out in the morning and I'll check it when I get back.

My cranking battery recently went out, but it was a sudden death. I lost the belt on the motor and the battery was drained to nothing. I charged it back to full, but it would not hold the charge. Charger would show good, but the battery was still dead.

I've had the boat out several times since I put a full charge on the battrey and it seems to say charged to between 12.5 and 14.V.

I think I found the culprit in the boat yesterday that was draining the battery down ....  He was seven years old and goes by the same last name !!  lo lo  He promised me he wouldn't play in the boat anymore if I wasn't there to watch him.
