"Remodeling" jon boat
« on: July 19, 2009, 04:34:51 AM »

I have 2000 (I think) 18' Super Nova jon boat with a 90 HP 4 stroke Johnson on it.  I would like to change some things on the boat.  I would like a bigger gas tank, more storage, possibly slightly bigger front deck, and a livewell.  My problem is that there really is no room in the rear to but a bigger tank in.  I would have to cut out foam from under the seat to even come close to sliding a bigger tank in there. Same thing for the front, there is only the small storage in the middle of the deck and foam on both sides of it.  Would there be a problem in removing some of the foam?  I know there are boats with zero foam under the front and rear decks, but figured this was by design and mine probably had it for a good reason (like floating!).  Another concern is the boat is only rated for a 75 I think.  So, the extra weight of the motor has me concerned about removing any foam.  Any thoughts on this?  Thanks.

IMO you could prolly remove a little of the foam for space gathering but I'd be more concerned about the 90hp when it's only rated for 75hp. There's a big reason for that. Transom strenth is the biggest, If it breaks the transom off, it wont matter how much foam you have in it, your gonna be swimming to shore and be out a boat, motor and whatever tackle you had on board...Steve

Im not concerned about the transom strength.  It is strong enough.  Besides, its kind of like medication...it doesnt really expire when it says it does.  The regulators are very cautious.

And so are the water cops. Overpowered, per the plate, can cause legal problems.
