Water PSI...Quick Question
« on: August 22, 2009, 05:09:13 PM »

Got my engine rebuilt last year, and the lower unit worked on...water pump & impeller replaced.

Just replaced the Water PSI Gauge on the boat...before I just watched to make sure the engine was peeing.  (gauge never worked since I owned the boat, so I bought a new one to put in.)

Just took the boat out today and here is how the gauge reads....

idle: 2-5ish psi (great pee stream)
3-4K rpm: 10ish psi (great pee stream)
5K rpm: 14ish psi (great pee stream)

I never went above 5K rpm but was just under the 15psi line.

I don't have a jackplate, the engine is bolted to the transom so depth is fixed.  Didn't really seem to affect PSI trimming the engine up or down until it was almost too high up then it started to drop so I trimmed back down to keep it at 14ish PSI.

Is this good or normal PSI?

My engine is a 1993 Mercury XR6 150 2.5L outboard.  It's running a Lazer II 24" pitch stainless steel prop.

The whole time the engine is peeing good and gets stronger with the rpm increase.

I just took all the hoses off and connectors and cleaned them to make sure there was no obstructions before going out today.

Your input & ideas are welcomed!  Thanks!

William

You should be good with 14+ at 5000 rpm. My 225 Merc never gets much over that even with the low water pick up.

Thanks for the replies!

My mind is at ease now.....didn't want to overheat the engine due to poor water flow!

I use to have a Mercury racing engine and was told by the mercury boys at the plant that 10 psi at wide open throttle (6800 rpms)was the minimum, and 5 psi at idle.
