Re wire a bass tracker to make it a ocean flats/bay boat?
« on: December 10, 2009, 10:04:04 AM »

How much do you guys and gals think it would be to re wire a used bass tracker? I hear that a regular boat would be fine in the ocean but the wires are going to get messed up and what not... Can you shed some light on this subject?

Rewiring it wouldn't be hard at all and would cost around 60 bucks in material,,I would look at the wires in it and see what its wired with now. If its got marine grade wire i would just get some protected gel and put it on all the connections. Marine grade wire has a protected applied to the bare wire before its coated and is less likely to corrode in salt air than regular wire.

Well, yes and no.  Marine grade wire is tinned to protect it from corrosion.  But don't forget that all of the butt connectors, all of the spade connectors, all of the ring connectors, all of the junction boxes now need to be of a corrosion resistant material like stainless, brass or bronze.

Also, if it's going to be used in a saltwater environment, all screws/fasteners need to be non-corrosive along with things like your cleats and other hardware on the boat.

Steve is correct about the fasteners,, nowdays most connectors and fuse panels are made with brass or stainless, i would coat all connectors and fuse lugs with NOLOX. you can buy it at the electrical supply store. Its a protected required on all connections on the incoming wires into a home by federal code. On all of the other exposed threads of bolts and things you can apply some anitsez to them to help protect them. There is NOTHING that will 100% keep the saltwater and salt air from corroding things, even doing all you can to protect things in time you will see the salt take a effect on something.

Which also includes trolling motor, live well pumps and bilge areas.  All have to be saltwater design.  The most IMPORTANT thing I fail/pass when doing vessel inspections is electrical.  Especially with an aluminum boat!
