Lookin for a nnew crankbait rod
« on: December 16, 2009, 08:08:39 PM »

Maybe this has been beat to death, but I couldn't find quite what I was looking for in a search. Anyway, I'm wanting a new rod to use for deep crankbaits. Not wanting to go over the $150.00 mark either. Wanted to hear from some people with some of the rods that are on the market right now, or very experienced guys that have at least handled some of these newer rods in that price range. I've been considering the KVD cranking rod, St. Croix's glass, and now the Skeet signature rod. So what do you guys have to say?

I use a Shimano Crucial cranking rod for my deep cranks and love it, mine is one of the 7'0" models......and it's almost at the price you want --- $159  ;D

You can get them at one of our UB sponsors ==>  "BTD"

I love the St. Croix Mojo crankbait series for my shallow and medium diving cranks, but when it came to lures like DD22's, I needed something a bit heavier. For that, I went to the Abu Garcia Vendetta in a 7'3" MH/moderate action. This coupled with a Revo Winch, pulls a DD22 through the water effortlessly. You'd be surprised how
much difference a rod makes as far as effort on your part goes.

BinK...Shimano rods are hard to beat (well, hard to go wrong with)...any thoughts on the difference in a Crucial vs a Compre as used for cranking?  where you want a parabolic rod...I'd think they'd both be very close in performance...with the crucial possibly of a slightly faster action...

Unfortunately, the Crucial I have is the only Shimano rod that I own, so I cannot try to compare it to the Compre. I do like the way the Crucial works for fishing anything from Rapala DT-10 all the up down to DD-22, so my way of thinking is "why fix what isn't broken"  ;D

I do have a 6'9" Parabolic Carrot Stix Cranking Stix that is much lighter which I use for cranks less than 10 feet.

I guess I was assuming a medium action rod...for those DD-22's I step up and use the MH rods...

Deep cranking is a technique that I don't use very often, so I feel I don't need to spend another bunch of money on a new combo, but if I ever do, then I'll give a MH a try  ;D

I thought I'd get a little more feedback on that KVD rod, but guess not many have one. Thanks for all the other input so far guys. Next time I'm at BPS I'll take a look at the shimano's.

I'm pretty happy with the Allstar cranking rod. It has a soft tip, which I like when fighting the fish.

I use the Carrotstix Parabolic 6'9" and at this point wouldn't trade it for another rod for shallow cranks.  It's perfect.

I throw all of my Crankbaits on a 7' Fiberglass Citrus Stick with a Calcutta 50B and 15lb Mono or 20lb. Braid depending on the type of year. I used to throw all of my Crankbaits on graphite rods, but I found that as I started cranking more, I began to start ripping hooks out, especially when I'm fishing braided lines. The greatest thing about the Citrus Stick Fiberglass is that it weighs less than most 7' graphite rods (5.1 ounces).

i have the KVD rod and its one great rod, its tip is so sensitive and the back bone is strong enough to pull in that big fish, after switching to this rod i got more quality hook ups

St. Croix  Mojo Bass is hard to beat. The best $80 I ever spent on a rod.

BPS Crankin' Stick...It's only $69.99 and it is the best rod I own.  I am going to go get a couple more Friday.   That way I can use one for swim baits, one for crank baits, and one for lipless crank baits.  It is an awesome rod and the price is great for the quality.

Do you guys think that a crucial drop shot rod which is a Medium power Fast action rod would be good for crankbaits?

I think there are much better rods for the money that this rod.  In fact I have one and I don't even use it as there are others better.  If you already have one, then by all means give it a try.
