Rid of Chine Walk
« on: December 29, 2009, 04:16:32 PM »

Since I bought my Triton earlier this year I have been learning to deal with the Chine walk. It is a TR-19 with a 200 Merc 3.0 liter, and a 6" T&H Jackplate. Well this weekend I installed a 2" setback spacer giving me 8"s total. It took 90% of the walk out of the picture. Used to around 61 or so it would start in real bad, now it doesn't get any walking affect untill the low 70's. I'm getting a little blow out coming out of the hole, just can't trim up as fast. I think I can eliminate that with working with a few different props.
So if your tired of having to learn to drive a Triton you may consider setting the motor back a little.

Do you know if the TR21's have the same issue?  i'm leaning toward a used one, but im still open at this point.

As I understand it all TR hulls had the chine walk issue. Thats the reason for the hull redesign in 04 (I think it was) to the X Series. Chine walk is not a major issue and can be 'handled' with seat time. I had a guy that runs racing boats suggest setting the motor back to help the handling, thought I would try it, glad I did.

Jerry, from what I heard from a few owners of the Explorer series they absolutely love their rig. If its chine walk you are concerned about, don't be. The explorer is a very well built and designed hull.

A friend of mine has a 10" Bob's Machine Shop hydraulic jackplate he wants to sell as he sold the boat and the guy didn't want it.  If you're interested in it, PM me and I'll give you his phone number.

Well, Triton known for "chine-walk" but it is really easy to control once you get enough "seat" time. The TR series had more chine  then the X series but again, after driving the boat for awhile you'll get to control it .

I used to have the 99 TR-21 with 225 mercury and it chined bad, now I own the 04' TR-21X with 225 mercury optimax and its allot different, easy boat to handle in any situation, absolutely love it. I used and still using the 6" plate but Chine control to my opinion is driver skill, nothing else.

thanks for your input , i am looking to slow the chine walk down . i can stand a little but when my boat gets up to the rpm range of the motor the chine walk is what i would describe as violent. . you have to back off the throttle to about 5100 to stabilize. i've owned and driven boats for about 45 years but this is my first fresh water boat and its going to take some time to adjust .

When it starts to chine you will have to make small steering ajustments to keep it balanced.  The key is Small. Big steering movements will make it worse.  What causes chine is the boat trying to fall off of pad.  Everytime you feel it start falling off to the right, make a quick 1"-1 1/2"
movement of the wheel to the left.  This will put it back up on pad.  With tritons and stratos it is a constant making corrections, but when you get used to it you won't even know your doing it.  ;)

next week i will put a 6 " jp and see what happens. . the chine walk doesn't start till the motor gets trimmed up to get the speed and the rpm level up.    boat came without jackplate and wrong prop .  rpm level was5100 trimmed up or down .  went to a 23 and speed increased but i still had to trim motor up to get max rpm.

Jerry, I woiuld definately recommend installing a 6" JP. It will help the overall performance and handling of the boat. Set you motor at 2 3/4" below pad to start and slowly move up 1/4" at a time till you see water pressure drop. Need to keep a minimum of 15-18 PSI at all times. Also I would look to see about borrowing a 24P to try and play with. JMO.

That Hull will always Chine when on Pad.  The reason Triton is one of the faster production boats is because when the motor is trimed properly they are bow high and there is very little boat in the water.  ;)   You will never get rid of the chine on that boat, You just have to learn how to control it to get maximum performance out of it.

6 inch jp installed , running 58-60 turning 5200 but when i jack the motor up to get the correct rpm range it gets wild.     seems the only time it gets the chine walk is when i trim the motor too much

Jerry, You don't have a triton trimmed right if it's NOT chinewalking.  Most High performance bass boats are going to try to walk when they are approaching top speed.  There is No way to get around it if you want to be able to get top sped out of the boat.   You just have to spend the seat time and learn how to make the small steering wheel corrections that will keep it from happening.   ;)

I got totally rid of any walk by raising my engine. I am running a TR-18 with a 150 Evinrude nice handling rig.
