I always have one tied on also. I fish mine on 8 lb pline fluoro 7' med-xfast, wacky style with an o-ring, owner 2/0 camo green wacky hook  and for weedless I change my hook to a gamakatsu 1/0 weedless worm hook. If I need a little wheight I pinch on a small splitshot to the hook.

Is a 4/0 gamakatsu finesses circle hook to big for a wacky style setup? I see most people use a 2/0 or even a tiny 1/0 circle hook.

another + for the o-rings with any finesse hook (I use the gamakatsu ones)- It seems to be a much better hook up ratio for me, and the baits last much longer, I mean MUCH longer... I've caught 14 fish on one senko with this rigging, the worm will actually slide up the line so they can sling it off from shaking too.

I saw the article you are talking about- the ironclad baits- seems pretty interesting I'll wait to see if it goes anywhere; the senko is definitely a versatile bait haha

I often use smaller #1 and #2 octopus hooks for wacky rigging 4" and 5" senkos, and still have good hook ups, but I do prefer a 1/0  ;)

I think you can use a 4/0 hook, but I personally think it is too big and never go over a 2/0.

I notice a lot of guys are using small hooks on these soft stick baits.  I have a question?

When using the smaller hooks I had a great deal of trouble with the fish swallowing the bait and the hook into it's gullet.  After moving up to 4/0 and 5/0 EWG hooks for texas rigging did not see any big different in the amount of strikes but certainly saw a lot less problem with the fish swallowing the larger hooks.  For wacky rigging had the same problem and changed last year to 4/0 circle hooks and rubber O rings and did not have a single gut hooked fish.

My question if for the guys using the smaller hooks.  How often are you ending up with a fish that is gut hooked?

Surprisingly Baron, I have only ever had one gut hooked bass, and that was because I put my rod down for a second right after I'd casted out and I was slow to pick up the rod and react. Once I got the bass in the boat, I could see that the hook had passed the throat, but half of the senko was sticking out. When I gently pulled the senko, the bass relaxed it's throat and the hook and bait easily came out  ~sweat ~sweat

During fishing, if I feel the bite I set the hook and 9 times out the hook is in the lip of the bass. The other 1 out of 10 time the hook is near the back of the mouth, but not gut hooked.

Needless to say I don't put my rod down with the bait in the water anymore.

I fished senkos almost exclusively and fished them texas rigged and weightless, but at the pace you would fish a crank or jerk bait.   I didn't know this was a slow presentation lure and would reel, reel, pause 2, repeat and get strikes everywhere from initial entry to water all the way to 6 feet from shore.
M.

That's my favorite way to fish the 4" Senko (weightless)...I cast out, let it sink then give a good jerk, let it sink, reel, jerk, sink etc...and I have found that I get a lot more bites this way - especially around rocks.  For whatever reason, black is the color they love the best in the river I fish, followed by black with blue flakes.

You can get the same o ring tool from bps or from cabela's; I originally ordered it along with a big order from cabela's and then saw it while i was in bps a couple weeks later... before I got that I used to just use little clear zip ties, they are pretty cheap at walmart- you can find them in the hardware section, they work just as good only takes a couple more seconds to attach each one then clip the tail end of the tie.

My 2 favorite ways are to t rig em , no weight and wacky , especailly the 4 inch size. A guy I spend a lot of boat time wioth likes to use different mil hooks and split shot to alter the fall rate. Thats too much like work for me, he does however slay them, he has that presentation down pat.

I have never gut hooked a fish. I use o-ring with 2/0 Owner wacky hook. I also set the hook at the first tap if this makes a differance.

I have a stupid/rookie question.  What is the point of using the O rings?  Common sense would sugest to keep the hook from ripping through the worm, getting more use out of the worm before its trashed.

I got one from bass pro just because I saw that you all use it.  But is that all its for, or is there additional benifits?  better action? better hook set?

Check out last month's Bass Master mag, it had a tip for using an old ball point pen  (bottom half) as a replacement o-ring tool.  No need to go and buy one esp if you have an old pen large enough to for the senko to fit inside so the ring can slip over it.

of course last year I didn't have the tool but did have the o-rings in large and small I just lubricated the senko with scent oil (not water) and slowly slid it down to the middle.  Worked just fine for me.  If you go too fast it discolors the middle of the bait, which may or may not be a bad thing as it will appear different than those that don't have a ring

This is what I have been doing for years  ~shhh ~shhh
I use the ball pen for my thinner diameter baits, but for senkos (with a thinker diameter) I needed a bigger tool, and the one I got from BTD is perfect.

TSF, there are no stupid questions here. When using an o-ring, the whole bait moves way up the line when the fish is hooked and head shaking, this keeps the baits from being damaged. With the o-rings, the life of the plastic baits is tripled if not more  ;D

Down here in Louisiana I have been using the senko on a shakey head jig and been wearing quality fish out.  I super glue the senko to the jig to keep it from sliding.

Hey guys new to the site and I must say I have been missing out. You good folks have a lot of useful information. Now back on topic. A friend of mine turned me onto the Senko last spring and now I won't be caught dead on the water with out a pack or three. My favorite color for the where I fish (Tennessee River) is by far Green pumpkin with a black flake. I have had a lot of success fishing this bait wacky style and texas rigging them wait less but I have also had pretty good success texas rigging them and putting a small bullet sinker painted black with a dot of red fingernail polish on opposite sides of the sinker. I started painting all of my bullet sinkers like that or different colors several years ago and it has increased my bite big time. Happy fishing everyone!!

ive used both the wide gap finesse and octopus and saw no difference in # of hook ups, i would feel confident using either of those for wacky rig

Dropshot-4" senko 12" of line 2/0 widegap hook usually 1/4 oz. mojo style weight.Put a curved bend in the weight and rarely hangs up.Catch fish year round in every depth.Havn't tried wacky style with this rig but am sure it would work.
