Senko Presentations
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:13:43 PM »

I seen in the December issue of Bassmaster a senko rig that had a swivel with a colorado blade attached to it on the hook before you put your senko on wacky style. I'm thinking that this wouldn't fall very well as the blade will be heavier than the sinko but if you were to work it with a pull / pause presentation it could have some great action. The blade could cause a thump that would really get the ends of the senko to pulsing.

Anyone got any experience with this? Or do you have a different way of rigging a senko you wouldn't mind sharing?

I mainly rig them Texas style and weightless. Throw to any structure or target area and let them sink on a semi slack line. Give it a few seconds after it stops falling and raise the rod to give it a lift and let it fall again. Most strikes will come on the fall. Works very well around docks or the edge of weedlines. I generally stick to dark colors with purple flake being my favorite.

There's a ton of ways to rig them, but by far my favorite is wacky and weightless.  Skip them deep under a dock on a bright sunny day and hold on.  I saw the rig you're talking about too, Mike, and thought it would be interesting to try.  Was wondering where you could pick up one of those spinner rigs.

I reckon you could take the spinner off of a beetle spin? Or some of the tackle companies will sell the peices, like Jans or Net Craft.

I think a lot of people over work the senko it was designed to be foolproof the bait works itself with all the different ways you can rig the senko it can be presented as a totally different bait each time you use it with that said I think the next time I'm on the water I will try it with a blade

I agree...Senkos are probably one of the top 3 plastics ever made and like Roland says "they work for you". I will texas rig weighted and weightless and wacky rig senkos. I am always open to new presentations though let us know how the blade works...it does sound very interesting

I fished senkos almost exclusively and fished them texas rigged and weightless, but at the pace you would fish a crank or jerk bait.   I didn't know this was a slow presentation lure and would reel, reel, pause 2, repeat and get strikes everywhere from initial entry to water all the way to 6 feet from shore.

I have two packs of them and only used them twice on a small farm pond. I never caught any on them so they got placed in the bottom of the tackle bag. After reading this I am deffintly gona break them out this year and try again in the bigger waters. What is the best hook to use for the wacky rig or others?

I found that 3/0 seem to give enough gap to allow the worm to move on hookset.  I used to use 2/0's but found I was missing hooksets due to the worms getting in the way.   I have used hooks as big as 5/0's but that's just me trying to protect the line from Pickerel :D

The truth is, 90% of your bites will come on the initial drop,  10% on the retrieve.

So I take it a 3/0 wide gap hook like i would put onother plastics would work fine for even the wacky rigged setup?

For wacky rigging senkos I put an o-ring on the center of the senko and use a #1 or a 1/0 size octopus hook through the o-ring. Never had a problem with hook sets unless the bass was smaller than the bait.

I use this set up for 4" and 5" senkos. I would use a slightly larger octopus hook for a 6" or bigger senko.

Ugh, I left out I pretty much only fish them Texas rigged.  Too many weeds to fish wacky here :D

I have fished the heck out of these baits the last two year. It all depends on the conditions but mainly I like to fish lilly pads with a texas rigged senko. I use a straight shank on because if you use a off set the bottom of the hook with catch part of the pad as you are trying to drag it off. In addition I use 10lb spiderwire invisibraid i use this type of line because if they attach the senko their is low stretch on that this bait so they have better chances hooking up. Or if you are fishing around tember and the fish runns with the senko and tries to wrap you are a tree you have a better chance of getting them out. But what I like best is the sensitivity of the line while working that senko

Have not tried the swivel with the blade on it.  For most of my fishing I have two rods rigged when fishing a Senko style soft stick bait.  One is a 7' MH casting rod, Revo SXHS fast retrieve reel, 30 lb test Power Pro, and a 4/0 Gamakatsu offset worm hook.  There is virtually no place I cannot throw this bait no matter what the cover is.  Works great fishing open pockets in weedbeds, lily pads, downed trees, etc.

The other setup is a 7' M spinning rod, wide spool BPS Qualifier spinning reel and either 14 or 20 lb Fireline, and a 4/0 Gamkatsu circle hook.  The soft stick bait is rigged wacky style with a small rubber band in the middle and the circle hook is placed through the rubber band

+1 on the o-ring and octopus hooks.  That's the set-up I use too and it works like a charm every time.  ~c~

By far my go to presentation! Love to fish it wacky with 8 lb evolution, pline.7' phfluger medalist spin combo , 2/0 gamakatsu finesse wide gap hook! Always produces good numbers of fish no weight needed down to ten feet.

I really hope you guys read this.  I fish here in LA where you have hydrilla, cypress knots, moss, etc.  All the stuff that really wreaks havoc if you don't have your hook protected.  If you like wacky style fishing but you get hung up with grass, moss, etc., try the falcon Weedless K hook with 1/32, 1/16, or 3/32 weight.  These are dynamite.  I can fish any cover, structure imaginable and never get hung.  If you are worried about hook-up rate, don't be.  These hooks almost lock over on themselves after you penetrate the fishes mouth.  Awesome.  Incredible hook-up rate.

I'll offer up this info that happened to me and you can use however you wish. I was fishing docks one evening with a wacky style senko. There was a little breeze, and as I made a cast up the side of a dock, the wind blew the slack of my line up over a boat cleat. I tried flipping the line back over the cleat but only managed to wedge the line under the cleat where it was stuck. So my senko is just hanging off the dock a couple of feet in the water and I ease the boat in to unsnag my line, all of a sudden I see my line moving off. I used my rod tip to unsnag my line from the dock and a 3 lber has my senko in his mouth. My buddy is having a fit that I caught a fish while hung up on the dock.

I thought how can I reproduce that same effect as being hung up on the dock. It looks a little unorthodox for bass fising but it works. Just something to think about.

I use that presentation quite often and have no problems reproducing it.   ;D

I am definitely going to work on fishing with senkos this season. Would this be a good go bait during a bass tournament when the fish are pressured. I am going to be fishing a big tournament season and I need a good setup to catch fish when everything else fails.

When it gets tough, the senko excels.  I NEVER fish without one tied on.  If they don't want a Senko then its a shakey head.

A soft stick worm like the Senko is ALWAYS worth having tied on.  Just something about a wacky-rigged senko that the bass just can't stand.  If you're fishing in thick woody or weedy cover that may snag a wacky rigged hook, then texas rig the senko and fish it weightless.  That is almost as good as the wacky style.
