I live in Illinois and me and my group of college buddies are die hard fishermen, and we would really love to take a fishing trip this summer. Looking for smallies, theres a lake we fish religiously here in IL, but want the real deal. Looking to keep it fairly cheap, would camp if possible, or possibly rent a cabin too. Were also looking to pull 2 boats, 2 16 ft jon boats w 25's on em. (nearly all the lakes we fish are 25hp limit) Keep in mind were from outta town, so no lakes too large for boat, and too big to find fish on in our small boats I know you guys might not wanna give up any super information, but any help would be appreciated. PM me if youd like, it appreciate any help!

Look in the Wisconsin fishing reports section. I've seen a lot of great smallmouth lakes mentioned there.

I use to live in Northern Wisc. and fish a few excellent smallie lakes. Butternut, Tomahawk and there is another (can't remember name) just across the road from Butternut. The Monominee river was an excellent smallie river. The river and butternut are perfct for the size of boats you mentioned.
Being that it is going on ten years since I left Wisconsin and that my memory for specifics is going as fast as I am aging, I sent you to that link for more information than I can give.

thank u very much, i appreciate the info. im googling the lakes and river u mentioned as we speak. if anyone else has some info that would be greatly appreciated!

As long as you're looking, check out Lake Mohawksin in Tomahawk.  It's a somewhat large (1,800 acre) impoundment of the Wisconsin River.  There's a campground on the lake that I believe offers camping, and there's a great bait shop/motel right on the river called Aquatic Arts.  While they're not cabins, they are comfortable and clean rooms that many of my clients used to stay at.  You can keep your boats tied to the docks at night.

You might think about the Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. We used to go up every spring and kill'em. As long as you stay aware of weather forecasts, mainly wind, your boats are fine. If winds are supposed to blow, Lake Owen in Drummond is only about 30 miles south. The Bay has world class smallies, eager to eat, almost suicidal. I haven't been in awhile, it's a long drive from Florida.

What months are you looking to go? Bay of Green Bay can be unreal from 1st week of May until the end of June, then the fish really spread out in the Bay. With smaller boats you are at the mercy of the weather, but there are launches in all the bays, and some have multiple launches. Mid-May till Mid-June are peak months with lots of fish shallow in the bays.

I would look at staying around Sturgeon Bay, its centrally located in Door County, theres camping, resorts and cheap motels.

Try Oconto Falls. Lots of good smallies & largies.
