Abu Garcia Veritas
« on: February 04, 2010, 01:03:49 PM »

I've recently had the opportunity to fish with a new rod on the horizon, the Abu Garcia Veritas.  The model I used was 6'6", medium action with an extra fast taper.  Total weight of the rod, 3.5 oz ... correction - the Veritas/Premier match was incorrect, sorry guys.  Being in New Jersey, it was more like 3 hours of casting practice but it was still great to be out on the water.  The guides are a titanium alloy with silicon carbide inserts, 10 guides including the tip on this model.
Here are a couple of photos:

I've recently had the opportunity to fish with a new rod on the horizon, the Abu Garcia Veritas.  The model I used was 6'6", medium action with an extra fast taper.  Total weight of the rod, 3.5 oz and it's designed to be matched with the Abu Garcia Revo Premier.  Being in New Jersey, it was more like 3 hours of casting practice but it was still great to be out on the water.  The guides are a titanium alloy with silicon carbide inserts, 10 guides including the tip on this model.

How did you manage to get to fish one?Are you a ABU Garica staffer?... the final production rod that will be not introduced until ICAST this summer (july) and wont be available in stores until September 1, 2010.Also Iaconelli will be fishing this rods at the Bassmaster Classic. As far as I know only a few of the Abu Garcia pro team members have them and they are not the final poduction models as the production models will have a different low profile sic guides. The Veritas rods will have a total of 13 models - 8 casting and 5 spinning and all will retail for a $99.95.There is also another higher end ABU rod that is in the hands of some of the ABU pro team members for testing.

He's in the industry. Writers get stuff pretty early too if they are recognized.

Actually, I'm not an Abu Garcia staffer nor am I in the industry but I've done some writing which is exactly why I was granted the privilege to field test this rod.  I pull no punches, provide an honest assessment, good or bad, of the equipment and I'm just a regular guy.  I provided a first impression review after 3 hours of fishing time.
Another tackle review website did their reveal a few weeks after me and the response is positive.  I was informed Mr. Iaconelli and I came to many of the same conclusions, opinions, feelings?  However you want to put it.
The only difference between this rod and the production is the guides, which will be lower, closer to the blank.  The guides may also be black as opposed to metallic.  Otherwise, it's pretty much in it's final form.
If you have any other questions I might be able to answer about this specific model, please feel free.
thanks

What can you tell of the rods balance. In the past some of there rods in this product line (vendetta)have been tip heavy even tho they say that they are designed to balance with a revo reel.Even many of the rods in there High end Fenwick Elite Tech line are also tip heavy. Also do you have any comments on the BMW white blanks.Do you think that anglers will buy into the white blanks...Thanks

Matched with a Revo Premier, ~6.6 oz, with the rod tip at about the 1:00 position, there is no tip heaviness whatsoever.  With the rod tip at 3:00, there is moderate tip heaviness but I think that's the case with most rods.  I think a medium weighted reel, like the Revo STX, any tip heaviness would be decreased.  The picture below should give some indication to the balance of the rod.  The rod is set on a level floor on the butt cap and it stands independent of other support.  The only other rod I have seen with that degree of balance is Megabass.
I don't foresee a problem with the white blank over time.  There's a bit of initial shock (?) but it once it hand, it's all about the comfort and lightness.  The white also has an iridescent quality, as well.  It's not a glaring white.
Hope that helps.  Here's the pic:

that looks like a great rod at an affordable price. Was Ike using one of these spinning rods during the classic?

He was using a bunch of them, both spinning and casting.

Hey ladies and gents, just wanted to keep you in the loop about the Veritas and how it's performing on the water.
Well, the model I'm using, a 6'6" medium action, extra fast taper has been close by on the deck and after quite a few hours casting and catching, I figured out what it does best for me, light cranks in shallow water.  That's not to say it wouldn't do well with lighter jerkbaits and smaller topwaters, it was just the process of elimination that showed the way.
There is something of note that I would like to bring to your attention and that's how well this rod handled fish.  I know a lot of folks like the old standby moderate or slow action rod for crankbaits but this rod hooked the fish and held the fish.
More to follow ...
