i use a fluke a lot. my favorite color being black in most cases. i use a 1/32 weight and usually a 2/0 or 3/0 hook. i miss more fish with the 2/0 but get way more bites. anyways i would like to hear the way you guys like to use flukes and what is your favoritw weight and hook size to use.

use either a 3/0 or a 5/0 Mustad EWG MegaLite Ultrapoint hook...rigged texposed.

Weightless here also, and usually with a double fluke rig 

If I wanted to fish a fluke deeper, I will fish them on a drop shot rig.

I use a Mr Blitz Toad Toter hook 4/0. They're available with belly weights or without. I really like em on a fluke.

When I fish a fluke, it's one way.  I use a 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook and fish it weightless.  If I want to fish it deeper, I simply let it fall longer.  Like a wacky rigged stick bait, I believe the fluke is best fished weightless and let the slow, subtle fall trigger strikes.

i have fished it weightless quite a bit with a 5/0 owner hook. i like a lil weight on it if i am fishing around grass or in it. i have missed a few with the 2/0 but i get a lot more bites. my thinking is that i may get more bites bc the hook is almost covered and invisible. the less hook is exposed the more realistic it looks but then again i know a lot of bigger hooks are used wth this bait. the other day i put a 4/0 hook on it and they wd not touch it. i went back to the 2 and they went back to killing it

I use a 4/0 gamakatsu ewg hook. If I use a small hook the line twists and I try not to use swivels unless forced to (ex C-rig). I agree with smitty though; not sure what the ratio is but I do get more bites with a smaller hook (2/0) but land more fish and avoid line twist with the 4/0 hook. Oh yeah always weightless...IMO the lighter the fluke the better the action

FWIW...Steve, I have had my butt handed to me once or twice by guys fishing a pegged 1/32 ounce bullet weight ahead of a 5" zoom super fluke...  suffice it to say 99% of the time I fish it weedless...but sometimes those darned green and finny einsteins just want something a bit different...

I also feel a fluke should be fished with no weight, looking natural is the biggest attraction of the fluke.  For my purposes I like a 4/0 Gamakatsu for the majority of situations, if it need more weight I generally go to a heavier wire hook like a 5/0.  I never use weight on the fluke itself.  If I need to get down deeper and need to move through or close to the tops of weeds I tie on a small black swivel and then use a short leader of fluoro to the fluke hook.  This keeps the bait in the zone I want and stops line twist as an added bonus.  If the need to get even deeper comes up add the weight to the main line AHEAD of the swivel like you would for a carolina rig.

lets say you are fishing 6-9 feet of water with logs and laydowns on the bottom and the fish are tucked on tight around cover and you need fluke to stay on bottom. would you still use no weight or how would you guys fish this?

I use a Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG Superline hook.  I Texas rig it with no weight.  If I'm wanting to fish it a little deeper, I'll use a swivel about 12" in front of the fluke.

good question...the answer 'depends' on:
how windy is it?
how do the fish want it?

My first choice is to fish it weightless on flouro (jeez did I really say flouro?)...if the conditions allow...if it's really windy and I can't stay in contact with the bait or the line 'bellies' too much...I'd try to go with least amount of weight possible...

although I might just resort to running a crankbait or spinnerbait or jig through that stuff...instead of the fluke...


BTW:  black is a way under-rated color in the fluke...especially in the spring...

Yep, I'd still use no weight.  What I would do is fish it a lot slower than in shallower water and give it longer pauses after the lure does start to come up off the bottom.  Does it work?  You bet it does!!!!

i catch more on a black fluke throughout the year than i do on any other color even watermelon. hands down to me its better. i have used both watermelon and black and about the only place the watermelon may out fish it is in clear water but heck i can even get them to bite the black in clear. this is my opinion based off resluts i have had

I like to use a 4/0 wide gap that i modify myself to give it a little bigger bite and better hook point angle. Also there are times when a red hook works better, but not always. You can also try inserting the hook point a little deeper into the nose of the fluke thus making the nose point upward making the bait jump out of the water on the twitch, also turning the plastic slightly just before inserting the hook point in the belly will give it a little different action. Sometimes thats what it takes to give you a little extra edge. Hope this helps.

Usually just weightless, but if the fish are a little more active I'll use a really small bullet weight; doesn't really matter if it is lead/tungsten... whatever just enough to give more action

I use a Red 1/32 oz Gammy 4/0 most of the time. 90% of the time I get a strike on the first fall. If I don't get a strike after a few twitches I bring it in and try again.

I use a glass bead on my buzzfrogs...helps shed weeds...and maintain bait integrity over a couple of fish...

wondering...does anyone use a glass bead ahead of a fluke?  it's put a small bit of weight their..and theoretically, should bring it through weeds better as well...

After it worked so well on the buzz frogs tried adding the glass bead on several other baits. IMO thought it killed the normal gliding action and the horizontal fall of the fluke.

I'm guessing kind of like a 1/32 ounce weight would kill that glide too...

Alsways thought when you put the weight on...it becomes more like a shaky head rig...in terms of approach...unless you're split shotting...

That is exactly what the Reaction Innovations screwed up does... only like I mentioned previously it also screws into the nose of the bait- pretty neat

I fish them weightless as well. Usually on the same hook I throw a Senko on, either a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG Gammy. I don't fish alot of deep water so the weight from a 5/0 is more than enough to get the bait in the zone.
