Hydraulic Steering for older stratos
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:46:14 AM »

I have an 88 179V. I would like to find out if its possible to put hydraulic steering on it. How tough and how expensive would it be to do this. I have to "crank" the heck out of my steering wheel to turn it and on relatively sharp turns i almost have to stop or i'll be out of the channel markers. Any other cheaper suggestions would be great too. Thanks

It should be no issue to do.I have a 1985 375 VT with a Yamaha Pro-v.I have a sea star hydraulic steering in it.I got it cheap as i was in the boat biz.Retail the similar unit inclusive of hoses should run around $600 to $800 .Thats with a tilt column, ram and hoses. I had to use 45degree fittings to allow the engine to get full tilt upward to clear the transon and that is with a fixed 3" jackplate. You can get a Baystar which is the low budget version for about $150 less.It depends on where you get the parts on what your going to pay.Do some shopping and you can save money.
Spring for the extra cost for the tilt column as it is worth it.
In any case it can be done and is well worth it.
