Best hook for throwing a 4" zoom horny toad?
« on: November 24, 2009, 07:52:51 PM »

I've been using a few different hooks with mixed success and would like to find a good hook to righ the 4" zoom horny toad.  I see the 45 degree bend jig hooks and the weighted owner hooks with the pin & spring.

What hook works best for rigging the frog when throwing on 50lb power pro?  I haven't broken any hooks, just missed too many fish even waiting to feel the fish before setting the hook.

I use 4&5/0 straight shank and ewg hooks,,if your missing lots of strikes you might want to give this rig a try, it has worked great for me!!! http://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?topic=69444.0  ,

I simply use a 5/0 EWG Gamakatsu.  Texas rig the nose but just let the legs of the toad straddle the hook bend.

Thanks, I'll take a look and give these a try. I really like the strikes but landing the fish makes teh whole deal better.

I like anything that screws into the nose.  I noticed a vast improvement in hook-ups with a 5/0 screw in.  I like the wide gap and I bend the hook at a little bit so it is not as buried in the toad.

The ''hack attack'' frog hook from tru tungsten, love it.  I was sold on the 5/0 Straight hooks for a few years, this year I tried the hack attack hook, and changed my whole outlook. The frog wont roll over, and my hookups seemed to have increased a bunch. Give it a try, its worth the effort.

The Owner centerpin screw look hook is awesome, in either 4/0 or 5/0. They are also great for texas rig worms. The Owner centerpin shakeyheads are also great. The centerpin makes it extrmely easy to get the bait on straight, and the baits hold up better.

The Hack Attack hooks are the only hooks I throw on soft plastic frogs and its not just because I am sponsored by Tru Tungsten. I have found that the hook up % is by far higher than anything else I have tried. Being up here in northern IL and fishing the Fox Chain and Mississippi fishing frogs is an absolute must if you want to have a shot in any summer tourny.

Another vote for anything with an Owner centerpin, 5/0 great for a toad, also like the 4/0 and 3/0 for Texas rigging. And the shakeys are great, bait goes on straight, hooks are extremely sharp...centerpin also makes your baits last longer.

I use a 5/0 Gamakatsu Superline EWG.  The hook bend sits right in front of the toad's legs, which virtually eliminates short strikes.  I started using them last year and my hookup / landing ratio went through the roof!  Of course, 65# braid is a must here in Louisiana!!!

I have a question for the hooks above; what is the easiest way to rig the frog with these hooks?  I'm missing something here and have not been able to figure out how to rig w/out tearing plastic. Do you run both hooks through the nose and out or do have to push the eye of the hook through the frog from underneath to the nose and then tie your line?  Are you hooking the frog in the body of the the lure or back in the legs?  Any info is greatly appreciated.  Thanks,,,,,,Tommy
