senting plastics
« on: February 19, 2010, 01:40:43 PM »

you know how salty worms will soak up water and get them blisters on them ? well here's a little tip for ya. I will take a new bag of plastic baits and apply sent to the bag, seal it up, and let it soak until I use em. It really gets into the plastic and forms those little blisters. the sent lasts longer while useing them. oily based sents work better for me. water based may work better if you know you are gonna use them up more quickly.

see those blisters, they make the plastics  rip a whole lot faster. I tried this and stopped when I noticed 2 things
1. The baits tore right at those blisters
2, The properties of the plastics as a whole changed for the worse from this chemical reaction.

I believe those blisters are the grains of salt soaking up liquid. in that case they soak up sent. I havn't had any that were made any softer by this. but if they are softer, them wouldn't that be better for the fish to hold onto them longer? so what if you go thru a few more baits. more fish to cull thru.

The scents are mostly oil soluable, being dissolved with the likes of mineral oil.Like dissolves like, so the salt is NOT ABSORBING the scents, the plastics are and are also dissolving  , making them tear more readily
I use a couple of plastic stores on Ebay and ALLURINGBAITS .com, a fraction the price of Senkos, fish em side to side with people who fish the Yamamoto offering, we catch the same amount of fish, and i use 1/2 the baits. Thats a lot of money saved for the same amount of fish.

The salt is added to make the lures sink. The size of the salt crystals effects not only their drop rates but how easily they tear.

If you like senko style baits.....Look up Bummer baits. He is a local angler here in SC who makes one hell of a stick bait. Super soft and plenty of salt. They are just as good as the Yamamotos and HALF the price.

That's a pro tip for ya!!!!!!! ;)

Thats funny.  I do the same thing.  Is it me or do the plastics take on a whole different feel?  They seem almost GULPish in a way.  I have 100% found more success when doing this.  Great tip!!!!!

Look up juicedupbaits.com then click on the Attack Pak logo.  Juiced up baits is an attractant made by Ralph Riley in Kentucky.  It works by injection.  you take a turkey basting syringe (they are available on his site) fill it with attractant, then inject it into whatever bait you like.  Now, Juiced Up Baits has teamed up with Attack Pak lure company.  Together they offer soft plastics that are made with this liquid attractant (not powder attractant like a few other companies use).  The most asked question I get asked is :  Will these lures dry out while laying on your deck in the sun? The answer is NO!  Unlike other scent based plastics,  these lures do not have to be kept in their own "Special Liquid" to keep from drying out.  After a full day on the lake, you can hold the lure to your nose and STILL smell the attractant.  This process could very well be the next evolution in soft plastics!

Soak them in used coffee grounds, or get a small jar of liquified garlic and soak the baits in them

Or do nothing at all...open bag ...use plastic baits out of bags...w/out the added spray on ,,dip in,,,attractants...DO THEY WORK>>>of course...w/0ut any attractant at all..plastics catch bass right out of the bag...so why even bother with the attractants...

I am feeling you on this. I use Anise Oil, I mix it with mineral oil, psray baits and hands with it as an odor mask. Bottom line; I dont know if it works I have done it for decades and really dont know if it helps

I actually have some garlic Kickin Bass on the way to give it a try... except coffee grounds, I haven't had a chance to use the "pro" type scents yet (Kickin Bass, JJs, MegaStrike)

Garlic juice for me ranks right up there with Sexy Shad , Red Anything and the Wiggle Rig. JJ's is just very condensed garlic oil. My family owned an Italian Amrican Butcher Shop/Grocery Store and in a seperate building a Pizza Place; WE USED A LOT OF FRESH GARLIC AND OLIVE OIL ON OUR PIES>>> Never once, did a Bass come in for a slice. lo

I think if you read these threads long enough, the one piece you've missed is to get yourself a copy of Keith Jones 'Knowing Bass' book...(BK is kind of bashful about suggesting this one...)...

it's chock full of good, scientific data.    ;)

 ;D

Seriously, Pietro's 'on it' as usual...unscented plastics catch an awful lot of fish too...

And for an angler paying attention, you just might have noticed that there are days/times when the fish seem to prefer unscented over scented...

Just like 'LOUDER ain't always better' with regard to buzzbaits...so too, scent isn't always better than unscented.

It IS another variable for an angler to unlock on any given day...
