For various reasons, I'm not interested in pouring my own lead jigs, but I am interested in tying on my own skirts.  Unfortunately all of the pre-painted jigheads I can find are either (a) not exactly what I'm looking for or (b) very expensive (relatively speaking).

Is there any good way to powder coat these jigs without melting/painting the weedguard?

I use a small propane tank and just get the head hot enough to take the powder and melt when it adhesives to it.You don't have to put it directly on the flame,turn down the flame as low as it will go with out going out,usually turning the jig as you heat it for like 4 seconds,if the paint takes ,but doesn't melt on the head,just wave the head over the flame again ,you will see it melt the powder. If some weedguards get painted,it doesn't matter,the fish aren't trying to eat the guard anyways.

There is a high temperature tape made for powder coating. Comes in different widths, but it's rather expensive as tapes go, but it goes a long way. I use it to cover the hook eyes to keep the paint out. Never tried it with the fiber guards, I epoxy them in place instead of molding them.

I've also heard of folks covering the weed guards with aluminum foil, but don't know how well it works.

I always put mine in afterward also. I use a small drill bit in my drill to get the paint out of the hook eyes. It works good and is fast. I see how many weed guards will go in the hole for the guards then I super glue them in.I guess everyone has little tricks.

No there isnt that I have ever found.  The weedgaurd will distort if heated to a temp that will cure the powder properly.  Instructions are about 250 deg with a weedgaurd but they distort still and the paint doesnt hold up like baking at 350.

Use a base hole pin when painting and you wont have to drill out the paint.  Also a fluffy powder wont clog the eyelet.

get a cheap eye buster and after the first dip let it cool, pop out the eyelet and your good to go.  I bought my eyebuster for about 2 bucks.  I think it has 3k jigs on it.  I run almost every jig through it if it needs it or not.

I have done a little powder on jig headsw/ weed guards. I have tried maskig tape which works, however it leaves glue on the guard (yuck)  I have used a paper coated bread tie and wrapped it up the guard and it did a pretty good job. I just saw something in Barlows tackle it's a heat resistant sleve to put on the guard when you bake it. It's pricy though.
