WaveSpin Reel
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:56:20 PM »

Hey just looking to see if anyone owns this or has owned this reel and what they thought about it. I was thinking of getting it for my drop shotting rig. Let me know thanks.

Professional anglers and amateurs alike get loops in their line that can make a mess of the spool. Bass Professor™ Doug Hannon has created the perfect spinning reel with an innovative design that eliminates snags before they happen by handling loops in a new way. The reel skips from peak to peak on each wave and forces loops to lie down harmlessly eliminating tangles and birdnests. Loops are not offloaded during casts, which lowers friction for 30% longer casts. This allows you to fill spool to a higher capacity. Works with both mono- and super-braid lines.

never heard of them. good design idea though. but i cant help but wonder if the added friction will lower casting distance. of course with a drop shot you may not need a 100 ft cast.
i may have to track one of these down and take a look at it.

I have one and I use it for dropshoting and fishing a shaky head.  I like the reel and I have never had any problems with it.   The reel does cast well and is very smooth.  Doug Hannon invented the reel and lots of them have sold here in Florida.  Hope this helps.

I've heard good things about the reel, but I do have to wonder about the serrated reel spool edge.

When Doug was first marketing the reel at least three years ago at the Birmingham BassMaster Classic, he was touting the reel as being able to cast much further because of the serrated spool edge.  He equated it to running a boat in flat smooth water or running a boat in a small chop.  A boat will run faster in a chop than in flat calm, so a reel with a serrated spool will cast further.

Now he's saying that the serrated spool will allow you to cast further because it traps the annoying loops of line.

All I want to know is which is the story, cast further because of less drag or it traps the loops?

I really could care less about if it casts 20 feet further or less then a different reel. As long as it is smooth and it prevents backlashes which it seems to do I think it would be great drop shot rig. I might have to get it. I like the way the handle looks too its def different.

Hello fellow anglers:   Several folks that visit are members of your site have written me about the posts here, I might be of some help in answering your questions.    The WaveSpin Patented Spool Design provides much less friction because in the last 2/3 of a cast with a spinning conventional spinning reel the line is pulling against the spool lip 360 degrees,,,  the angled teeth on a WaveSpin lip force the line to skip from peek to peek of the teeth thereby removing most of that friction, thus providing for longer and more controlled casting.  The gaps between the teeth control line loops, preventing them from every becoming a birds nest,,, it is only brand reel in the world that has a "Bird nest Free Guarantee".  Check out the web for more details and testimonials,,,,,,,,,  hope this helps.

Yes, I do work for the company, I am VP of XXX-Stream Tackle, Inc., makers of the WaveSpin Reels. Which is why I suggest that rather than take my words here on this great sebsite, that interested anglers do a little research. Tackle Tour, Field & Stream, Disney, Bass Boat Magazine, NAFC, In-Fisherman, Outdoor Life, FLW, NBAA, B.A.S.S., Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops and many more have tested our reels and posted plenty of reviews & Awards. What is more important is that there are hundreds of feedback articles by those that really count,, the anglers,,, it is you whose standards we have to meet and you the anglers that we have to satisfy.  Doug Hannon invented the weedless trolling motor prop back in the early 80's and it of course is used worldwide today by all trolling manufactures. Doug used Bait casting reels throughout his career because of the problems that spinning reels always presented as far as bird nests were concerned,,,,, however, Doug also preferred the action and performance of spinn fishing and many times tried to perfect spinning gear.  The results of those years of work and by applying similar principals of the weedless trolling motor prop,, The WaveSpin Spool Design was born and eventually patented and put into production. Who else but the original Master of Tangle Free, "The Bass Professor" himself, would continue to use and expand on the knowledge he learned from the weedless trolling motor prop designs to eliminate the spinning reels greatest weaknesses.

Fellow anglers,  I wish I had adequate free time to join in more often but it is just not possible. I will have to save that luxury for my retirement days. I do visit this site when I can, simply because it is a great site. I have no intention in turning this forum into a place for me or anyone else from this company to jump on a soap box and make a sales pitch.  There are many brands of reels on the market, and regardless which brand you may buy or are partial to, enjoy your time on and off the water, always think of the eviroment, including our waterways and be safe out there.

Tight Lines,

You're welcome for the info. I was looking into buying a new spinning reel for saltwater use when I read that review, and I was impressed with what they said about it. It's not a Van Staal, but it's not as expensive either!  lo

I have heard plenty about this reel... but so far out of my years of using a spinning reel, as long as you use low memory line this is not a problem. Quality line negates the need for the wavespin reel... but thats just my take on it
