Winterkill reports?
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:44:18 PM »

We've had lakes and ponds iced over with lots of snow here since November (at least in Fort Collins). I suspecting we'll see some kind of winter kill this year on some of the smaller and weedier bodies of water like we did several years ago when we had all the snow sitting on the ice and blocking out light for months on end. Has anyone seen any evidence of this yet? We still have ice on everything up here but perhaps you could all be on the lookout as the ice comes off and post what you're finding here.

Just drove by horsetooth this morning, a couple spots in the shallows are starting to melt here and there, but its still just a sheet of ice across the vast majority, snow still on top in most areas.  And I was so excited to get a pole out, considering the weather here is getting so nice.  Any word on anything as far south as Denver starting to melt?

Hey Reno,

No winterkill here in Boulder area. We received so much water last spring that our ponds survived just fine. We did have kills in the shallowest weediest ponds during previous drought years though.

Hope your fishing is going well.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. I haven't had time to look too closely at any of the ponds in Fort Collins but I haven't noticed anything really obvious. I think we may have gotten by alright. Our ice came off up here almost a month later than any winter I can remember in the last 13 years that I've lived here, i'ts like I'm back in Minnesota. I guess that's all right...things have been so crazy that I haven't even had a chance to think about getting out and that will probably hold true until school is over in May. Good luck, everyone.
