Braid size for 200E7.1 curado
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:37:30 PM »

What is the smallest braid size you'd put on this reel?  I have a 200E5 spooled up with 50lb and it's been working pretty well, except for occasional spots where the line has dug in.

I guess you could put as light of line as you want. In the past I have had 40 lb PP and 50 lb PP on my Curado and had no problems. Right now I have it on my flippin' rod with 65lb PP but haven't used it on the water yet.

I run 30# suffix...(12 pound mono diameter)...have heard folks using powerpro at the 65 lb level as they indicate the thicker line helps prevent the braid from digging in...

I find heavier braid has some limits on my casting distance...and have stuck with the 30...

Plenty of guys I know use 8# or 10# braid on spinning rods...as it helps them with long distance casting...and also helps overcome those soft spinning rod actions...on hook sets...

Yeah on my flippin' rig I am not really too concerned with casting distance, but it does affect it.

The lightest I've gone on a baitcaster is 30 lb. PowerPro.  I don't see any need to go any lighter than that with a baitcaster.  I do have all of my spinning reels spooled with either 8 or 10 lb. PowerPro however.

What I do when I spool up a reel is insure that it's spooled TIGHTLY.  If I feel that I don't have it on tight enough, or need to retension the spool, I'll tie one end to the porch railing, put the reel in free spool and back up until I've emptied the spool.  Then I'll crank the drag down tight, put a good bend in the rod and crank all the line back onto the reel.

I can't remember the last time I've had the line dig in on me...

When I frst started using braid, I didn't know which to pick either so I chose in ignorance 20# braid.  I experienced line dig but in doing so, I learned the causes of line dig.  Much of the time it is angler induced.

The one thing that I will share is that generally speaking, the thinner the diameter of the braid, the greater the potential for Line dig.

I hardly ever experience line dig and I use 30# power pro. Even if I went back down to 20# I don't think line dig would be an issue for me any more.

I can't remember who said it...might have been Fogy, Beagle, Baron...probably someone else I've forgotten...

but they routinely tie their braid to the bumper of their truck, unspool it and 'wind it back on' under heavy tension...helps with the 'dig' factor too...  that's when I have my issues...after a couple 'almost' professional over-runs, the 'dig' gets a lot more likely...(with a looser spool)...

sorry I can't remember who said it...so I'll just credit all the folks at UB...

I use 65lbs power pro and do like coldfront said as in spooling it up in the house but once I'm done take the hook and attach it to the truck or the stop sign in hwy 527 and walk down Brownstone road until I have unspooled the reel, turn and put enough pressure on the rod to bend it over and reel it back in like that all the way to the hook.

Both the line size and spooling it back in under pressure will greatly reduce line dig, still after a hard hook set or a backlash one should unspool enough line to ensure you pulled out all the loops and or to the spot where it dug in on itself than respool it as tight as you can until you can respool it under pressure.

At least that is what has worked best for me.

my suggestion is 30 lb or higher Power Pro, or larger diameter braid could be 20+

My reason for asking is that I plan to pick up a 1500 yd spool of ppro and was wondering if I should get 30lb instead of 50.

I'd get the 50 pound.  Then you can always tie a smaller leader to it if you feel it's necessary.  I'd be willing to bet that you'll be pleased with the line.  After all, it's only 12 pound diameter, so it's not like you're fishing with rope!

I use 30# PP on my baitcaster set ups but then I am fishing mostly open water at my local lake. It has almost no vegetation at all but lots of chunk rock/concrete. Like the other fella's have said make sure you get it wound on tight no matter what pound test you use.

I've always had the impression that a flouro leader in those situations might be the ticket...if listening to folks talking about fishing 'zebra mussel waters' is any indication...
