Anyone fish Leon Brooks Hines Lake?
« on: March 06, 2010, 03:57:47 PM »

Leon Brooks Hines Lake is about an hour and a half away for me here in the FL panhandle, and also looking if a campground is nearby. I did not see any nearby campgrounds on Google Earth, but I wasn't sure if there was one in the thick wooded areas.

Any info would be appreciated.

Where's this lake located? I'd like to check it out if its close. I just relocated (temporary) to Monroeville, AL. If its close I couldn't possibly hit it in the evenings.

I have fished it once and it has LARGE fish in it. Not sure about the campground but you could stay over at Hurricane lake and then take the right onto Beaver Creek Rd which goes right by Leon.  As the crow flies it is only 7-8 miles through the woods according to Google Earth.  Probably 15 minute ride.  Leon is only open a certain number of days per week and it is like $3.00 to fish. Should be pretty good right now.  JH

Wait what? Pay to fish?
If thats the case, then I would just fish for free at Hurricane lake which has good bass fishing already.

Thank you for the info Jace

you need to check the website out, like Jace said, there are a ton of big fish (bass, crappie, bluegill, shellcrackers) in that lake.  it's an electric motor only lake.  I've been reading all of the information about this lake as well and will be fishing it hopefully in the near future.

There are a ton of big fish in Hurricane Lake too which means I really see no use for a Florida resident to spend more money in non-resident license, gas and "day fees" just to fish it when Hurricane can do just as well.
Last summer I saw one pulled out of Hurricane that was in the upper teens or possibly around 20 lbs.

my post wasn't  meant to upset you, i've fished Hurricane for years and know the quality of bass that are in it.  Just saying that from what i have seen, read and been told first hand that the other lake was worth trying out.

I understand that, I was just checking to see if it may have been worth the extra drive and cost for me to go up that way... but without a nearby campground it looks like it is not..

Thank you for the information

ive fished LBH lake 4 times in the last 2 weeks, i slap wore them out.  for 6$, its worth it.  the lake is in dire need of the harvest of peckerhead bass....im building up the fish fry weight. its a nice place.  i fish the weekend series in alabama and already have the license, so its  no big deal for me.  i have yet to go to hurricane, but will soon.

For me, Google Maps says 1 hr 32 mins.... versus 1 hr 20 mins to the north hurricane campground from here...

For that timing I think I will just go over to Lake Victor or Lake Stone and not worry about spending the extra $$$ on a non-resident AL license.

theh manager weighes every fish that leaves that lake, if you call him, he'll tell ya about the big ones that are coming out, he has to log them all.  he has seen many double digit fish already this year.

then add 30 for the license, 3 for the permit, and gas for for a supercharged v8. so over 100 bucks. cant justify it yet. i'm trying. but i cant. maybe if i saw some pics of the fish being caught out of there recently. but all the ones i have seen are from a year ago.

i guess depending how my trip to hurricane lake will determine how i feel about driving that far to fish a lake. if i do well at hurricane then that will keep me occupied and save me some money. if not..then ill put some money asade and maybe after next payday ill have enough to go.

Hurricane almost always has good bass fishing Mar-Nov, even if they are all under the 18" limit, it is fun just getting out to catch a few. Live minnows seem to work well, but I have also pulled several in using live worms and senkos.

well, yesterday i got a crappie on a pointer78 jerkbait that went 1.3lbs, and 5 largemouth, totaling 6.7lbs.....one was very small, the rest were good sized.  all on a shakey head and a green pumpkin/purple/gold finesse worm.  the day prior, they weighed one in that went 14.1lbs off the bed....that's a hawg for an 87 acre lake....sorry aaron, i didn't get your message until last night!
