Caddo, what should i be doing?
« on: March 07, 2010, 04:54:13 PM »

of course I pay attention to the fishing reports from caddo.  This weekend when I fished it I found areas of water in the mid 60's and there were defonitly bass in very shallow water.  I lost one that would have been the biggest bass i had ever seen outside of an aqarium.

But what am I supposed to be doing right now?  Fishing for the bass that are in the shallows on beds?  Fishing for bass that have not moved up yet and are still in the prespawn?

I am just trying to learn how to bass fish other than just throw random lures at trees.

You will catch bigger bass on beds but it takes patience big females will spook and not bite. It depends also if you are trying to catch numbers or quality fish. Sometimes bed fish are tough to get to bight. If you want to catch numbers of fish with some big ones here and there, you want go wrong running a spinner bait beside the trees wright now. I also like fluke and sinko's. Don't forget the old lizard or jig.

I really think that your temp gage is a little off.  I haven't seen anything 60 degrees.

I hope not.  I guess I could bring a thermometer and check it.  Ha, i guess i could tie it to a string and hold it a foot and half under water.  I dont think there is a way to calibrate it.  But atleast I would know how far off it is.  But, the majority of the water temp has been pretty much the same that everyone else gets (obviosly accept this last time).  Saturday evening when I went, I was spacificaly looking for warmer water.  I didnt find that 65 (as my depth finder says) water until late in the evening.  I'm deffonitly going back there Saturday morn and try for that bass I missed.

IDK, I hope my depth finder is not messed up.

It could be where your transducer is located.  Mine is on the trolling motor and if I ride around the lake it adjust to the air temp, then when I get to a spot and drop it in the water it take a few minutes to begin reading the true water temp.  So if it was 65* air temp and you lowered your trolling motor into the water it might not have had a chance to adjust by the time you took a reading.

I wish it were that simple.  The transducer that has the temp for me is in the back of the boat, a foot and half under water.  If it is off then i dont think there is any way i can correct it.

I was on Caddo yesterday from 6:30 to 6:00 Old folks Playground, South end of big green break, Jap Island, buzzard Bay, and Twin Islands warmest water I saw was 57 degrees.
Nothing much to report except I made a lot of casts and caught 4 fish all day. I know I was in some good areas cause I was with a guide. lo

A while back a dealer mistakenly installed my transducer on the back in the hull. I get warmer readings on it than I do on my trolling motor mounted transducer on the front. (i don't even pay it any attention now) Is your transducer mounted correctly?

ummmm, i think its installed correct.  Its on my transom where it can ride in the water while the boat is on plane.  I dont know how it could be installed wrong.

Don't worry about your temp gauge all that much they sometimes have a mind of their own and you may have run across a area of warmer water. As for what you need to be doing is fishing, some days are slow and some days they are biting good. PaPa I was out til about 2 or 3 and I didn't pick up but 5 with one being a good over on a jig & 1 slot & 1 under on a lizard. That leaves two more doesn't it, a crappie on the lizard and a big toothy whole lot of fin prehistoric thing on the jig  ::).

Last week I was catching some nice ones on a jig, they will pick up again soon. Trey and I are going to give them a try in the morning for a couple of hours.

I dont think there is anything wrong with your temp guage. Went yest. (wed) to caddo and saw 64 degree water in one pocket that gets very little wind and no current. Didnt do very good in there but that was several degrees warmer than the rest of the lake. But what do I know, there may be something wrong with my transducer also. Good luck takesonfishing.
