Trolling Motor Batteries?
« on: March 09, 2010, 06:19:23 PM »

Apparently the winter took its toll on my trolling motor batteries.

I'm looking at two Optima blue top group 27's. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Any better suggestions?

I don't have any experience with the Optimas, and I guess most folks didn't respond because of the same reason. I have had great success with the Everstart MAXX series. I don't think they are any better than the Optimas, but you can't beat their bang for the buck!

I use the optima blue top for my cranking brattery.  I can fish all day with all the electronics on and both livewells going without any worry about the motor cranking.  I use Bass Pro Shops AGM batteries for the trolling motor.  I can run the trollig motor all day in a stiff wind and still have good power at the end of the day.  Price is the only negitive I see to either one of those type of batteries.  If you can afford them, I'd get them.

I use Interstate Megatons 27s.  They are great.  I had one deep cycle last over 5 years and my cranking battery is over 6 years.  They run about 80$ each, which I think is like half the cost of the Optimas.  Check them out.

Speaking of batteries.  I have had to replace two of them. One was two years old the other one year.
Is there a way of getting more life from these batteries. I use Interstate for all three of my trolling motor
and have a Dura-last on my cranking battery.  Had to replace that one this spring as well as one interstate.
These cost bucks. any recommendations? How to keep em good. Got onboard charger for the trolling motor
batteries, I do not leave it on all the time. In winter if I am not useing the boat I will put the charger on once a week to keep them up.  This past winter was hard, is that just what killed em or is the ride hurting them.
We do take on some wakes at time.  Thanks in advance guys, know someone out there got a clue, I dont! v~

The quickest thing to kill batteries is lack of maintenance. Make sure you check the water level at least monthly, more frequently in the summer. top them off with distilled water to the bottom of the tube in each cell. Next, make sure you charge them as soon as possible after use.

Always make sure they are secure in the boat too. ;) Not sure what kind of charger you have but if it's a "smart" charger then leave it plugged in all the time to keep it topped off.

ok thanks for the advice. I do maintenance every month. Check batteries, running lights, trailer lights and
air pressure on boat trailer and truck.  I have plug this into the computer and it remains me every month to
do that.  Guess this hard winter just killed em. Just never had this many in one shot...again thanks for advice.

have a great day...catch a big one, smile the day away!
