What braid for spinning tackle?
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:22:54 PM »

Planning on putting braid on one of my spinning set ups for finesse presentations.  Will be going on a BPS Carbonlite 6'8" med/x fast rod with Shimano Sahara reel. What suggestions do you have?  Thanks in advance

I have some 11lb Power Pro on one of my spinning reels and it's awesome, super long casts and great sensitivity.

On another reel I have some 12lb Fireline EXT, again great for long casting.

I have a light reel setup with 10lb PowerPro, and usually suggest 20-30 lb for most standard spinning reel setups.

I usually use 40 lb PP but I have spooled up spinning 2 rods w/ 10 lb Suffix braid for this season and it seems like a quality line, but I haven't gotten it on the water yet. PP seems to go up in price every year so I am going to try and find something a little cheaper.... That is if I can find something that is equal in quality.

I'd go with a 10 or 20lb power pro, as far as I'm concerned and from my experience you cant never go wrong with power pro braid ~gf

If I'm using my spinning tackle, that means I'm trying to finesse the fish.  And to me, using 20 pound braid isn't finessing the fish.

On my spinning tackle, I'll spool them up with either 8 or 10 pound PowerPro or High Seas braid.  This line is so thin and strong that I don't need to worry about a leader and I catch a lot of bass throughout the year.

I do agree Steve... but in my case since the vegetation covers a good majority of the lake bottom, we tend to use 20-30 lb braid to make sure we can get the lure and the fish out of the weeds... but different lakes have different needs.

I love Fireline! It's on all my spinning rigs. I have a similar set up to the one you mentioned, Tim , and i have 8# fireline in the traditional grey color. I love the sensitivity and its casts great! I've used it in gin clear water and had no problems.
I use 20# Fireline crystal on my heavy spining rig for casting weightless worms.
Hope that helps.
Good Fishing!

Nope!  I have never seen any relatively decent guides get chewed up by braid.  The only rods I've seen with guide damage caused by braided line was really cheap ones.

Yes, a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away.  ;) I wouldn't use it with very old, antique type of rods, but most modern, even cheap rods now a days are braid friendly.

All my gear (spinning) has 20 to 40 lb braids of various brands on em, and all work great. I have 80 lb on my shark rod. I like power pro, fireline, tough line, Rip cord, and Gorilla line, but don't think they make that one any more.

I believe you need to be pickier on the brand and type of braid when you are using casting equipment, especially roundness, and size of line to cut down on line burying.

I use 30 lb Powerpro.  Has the diameter of 8 lb mono, which is what I use on my non-braid spinning reels.  Actually I use 8 lb P-Line floroclear.

I've tried various kinds of flourocarbon over the years and I just can't get excited about the stuff.  It still has too much memory and stretch for me.  I prefer PowerPro or High Seas braid.

Unless I'm fishing a Carolina Rig, it's all braid, right up to the lure, in whatever color or clarity of water I encounter.  I have some flouro that I use for C-rig leaders, but other than that, it's braid right up to the hook.

I know there's some guys saying, "But the fish can see the line in clear water."  And I say, So what!  They don't seem to care...

It's all about confidence and I have 100% confidence in PowerPro and High Seas line.

I think this also depends on the fish and the location. Many of my local lakes are heavily fished, and the bass that are left are VERY picky. Something as simple as the fish seeing the line can be enough to turn them away from the lure.

I dunno.  Braid has worked for me from south Florida to northern Canada and a lot of areas in between.  I still think it's confidence in your tackle, techniques and tactics more than fish seeing the line.

I agree with Steve, I haven't been in a place that fish seeing line was a problem, now noise and shadows is another story.

Believe it or not I even use braid on my c-rigs. My theory is if I am using braid for its high strength and durability, I'm just gonna stick with it. I had a issue with a mono leader on a c-rig that cost me during a tourney so I switched to the braid and see no difference.
