Steve Otten? Big Fish and over 15 lbs. on the last day? Are you kidding me? He didn't even know how to fish for bedders when I met him! Where did he learn to fish like that?  ~gf

In reality, I enjoyed showing and teaching all my non-boaters about bed fishing. It isn't as easy as it looks. There is so much more to fishing bedders than one thinks. It is an art in itself. Once you learn about the "G" spot, it begins to look real easy! Largemouth are more prone to needing to hit the "G" spot, more so than the aggressive Smallies, but it still works for both when you find it.

My nons, Steve Bewly, Steve Otten, and Cliff Bell were very patient and very receptive to the "on the job" lessons and training of bed fishing. I am "very" proud of these guys and their results and how they executed what they learned throughout the rest of the tournament. If you do not know what or where a fish's "G" spot is (the "Go" spot), better hurry and ask one of these guys! These guys all know now what that means....and it does work! Fish will be bedding here in Colorado pretty soon!

I am also proud to say that all of my non-boaters had more than one chance to come in with 5 fish and be right in the mix. Being that there was no money for finish positions in the top 12, and there were smaller fish all over the place, I felt there was no reason for the boaters not taking the time to make sure that both guys in the boat, at least had the chance to catch a limit of fish.

Not bragging here, but adding up my 3 non-boater's weights, for the tournament days they were with me, I believe they had about 40 lbs, or so, and I was lucky enough to finish well too. Ok, your right!...I'm braggin', but that is proof that you can get your nons on fish, without hurting yourself along the way, if you have a plan to work as a team from the beginning. Anyone have non-boater totals that equaled or beat my non-boater total? Just proddin' ya'll a little bit!

All this is a prelude to my requesting that the Federation consider having a  "Boater with the most Non-boater weight, prize!" If we make that prize lucrative enough, so lucrative that it is worth more than any other prize "on site" (like a left over trolling motor or something), maybe we can get more non-boaters feeling like they have a chance at these events and that they may be able to make the state team after all. Remember, some of the non-boaters are very good sticks and would make a great representative for Colorado at the Divisional tournament. Having that kind of prize available, might get more boaters to help the non-boaters more often. That act alone may help with some participation in the future. More non-boaters may ask boaters to go to these events.

Obviously, Steve Otten learned so well, this past tournament, that he beat my travel partner(4.79) and myself(4.80) for the $510 Big Bass of the tourney. What a schmuck! Him, and me for teaching him!

Hey! Shouldn't I get, like, half of that "Big Bass" cash, Mr. Otten?!!  lol

"Good fishin" to everyone!

P.S.-It's Dombkowski, not "Domrowski!!" Sheesh!!  ~roflmao

I can't say that I was able to put my non-boater on that many fish, though I would love to be able to say that.  I was able to get a decent limit the first day, and put my rod down, and try to find him some fish, but it was too little too late the first day.  2nd day was a different story, we both had decent limits early, and were able to go looking for more beds.  The 3rd day was a struggle all day and not many opportunities presented themselves to us.  Many thanks to Chad Brekke, whom I drew all 3 days.....poor Chad.....he was fun to fish with and is a quick learner.

You drew him all 3 days?  :-\  I'd say it was time to do the draw by hand again, I guess. I volunteer to help with the draw next year. Even if I am not in the tourney!  ;D

The draw has to be done by the software. I can set it to allow people from the same club fish with each other. But there are many reasons why that is not a good idea. The software uses a random number generator and assignes it to each entry and then randomly matches those numbers together and then checks to see if the associated club is the same. If it is then it trys again. I drew the same person for two of the three days. There was an issue with the draw after the first day. I had to rebuild the tournament, manually enter everyones weight again, then redraw for day one then draw for day two. This happens at every tournament and would happen even if done by hand given the same rules. Unless we have the same number of people from each club this will always probably happen.

Since you had to manually reenter the weights mine was low by say 8 or 10 lbs

Mike did you get my info in the PM?

Obviously, if there are more from one club than others, there will be some "same club" pairings. There doesn't have to be the "same person" pairings anytime, no matter what.

In the future, guys need to be mixed around so that they get a chance to experience different methods of fishing the same pattern. That is what we do.....educate our members!  ~2

I really dont care who fishes with who.  We are fishing against eachother same club or not, so why does it matter if your with your own club members?

The only issue I have with someone being with a boater all 3 days is that could p/o the other nons.  I would be mad if I was with 3 different guys and person b was with the same guy all 3 days.  It is WAY easier to adapt when you know the entire game plan and have been with that person.

But I dont have a simple solution if there is an issue with guys from the same club fishing together.  Actually why is it an issue?  I myself couldnt care less about the traveling trophy.  There was little to no chance of us laying our hands on it just due in part to numbers alone.

Either way carry on  ~roflmao

The intent is to keep the thought that "cheating" could even be a possibility with anyone involved. Would someone cheat? Probably not, but the opportunity would be there for that to happen, so it is best to avoid being in that position.

Picture this; two guys, really good friends for years in another state and "brand new" to the Colorado Federation, are from the same club and are in the same boat, and one has the potential to make the State Team and one does not. The guy, with no chance to make the team, catches a very large "big bass potential" fish. There is $500 on the line, so they decide the guy, with a chance to make the team, will weigh the fish in his creel. Should it get the big bass pot, the guy without the chance still gets the cash, but the weight will surely help the guy with the shot at making the team. Who would know what took place but those guys?

Would that happen? Maybe not. Could that happen? Oh, yea! Money and egos makes a guy do crazy things!

Best case scenario.....avoid putting anyone in that position of "possibility." Always the best choice, "when possible!"

I never fathomed that a friend of mine, weigh-master for a tournament, would ever "refuse" to measure a competitors fish when asked, and then dump the fish quickly into the water, before anyone could say or do anything, either. But that happened too!  :shocking:

I can't believe I'm writing this but I agree with Joe.

I assume the refusal to bump a fish again didn't happen in this tournament or since I have been tournament director. My policy is try and make the fish go. if it does not the person bumping is supposed to notify me to verify that it is short.

Chris I printed copies of the day one results and gave it to each club. I reentered the weights from day one and had three other people verify that it was correct. This took me 4 hours after the weigh in to do. Then I had to get my stuff ready for the next day. Being TD sucks and it's things like this that make me want to turn it over to someone else, maybe someone who always has the answers after the fact. I know you are just kidding Chris but it does hit a nerve.

Yes I got your PM thanks.

No, that did not happen at this or any tournament you have been TD...at least to my knowledge.  Mike I think you did a very good job and are to be commended.  I was involved in the weigh-in on day 1 and there for the other two also.  Everything was handled just fine.

Being tournament director is really a pretty thankless job.  Hopefully we all thanked you several times during the event and here on the website.  Keep up the good work.  Other than the computer glitch the first day everything went pretty smoothly.

I do agree a non-boater should have to fish with the same person three times.  Think there must be a way to solve that problem.  We tried hiring a tournament director who didn't fish the event and that didn't go over very well.  Looks like we have found a keeper in Mike Hubbard as T.D.

Don't know about youse guys but I am so ready to get back out on the water...now if the weather will just cooperate.  Does anyone have Johnny Parks phone number?  I think I left my sunglasses on his boat probably in the glove box.  Help!

Thanks, Mike!  ~roflmao

It is important for the TD to be able to get volunteers to help. Don't hesitate to delegate some of the responsibilities to others planning on attending. I think anyone in the Federation would step up if asked.

Thanks Allen, I will give him a call.  Seems like every year I leave something on someone's boat.  I really enjoyed Havasu and would vote for a repeat sometime.  Don't get me wrong, I think Amistad is an awesome fishery too.  Maybe the next time down there we can all go to Mexico and catch a donkey show ~shade

Thanks everyone. I always feel like we have enough help. It was a little tougher without Audrey there but it seemed to go pretty smooth. Sorry for the screw up on the first day with the pairings. It was my fault. When I added the tournament to the schedule I selected the wrong year for the end date, that forced the software to think it was a one day tournament. Thats why I couldn't do the draw for all three days at the meeting. Live and learn.
