Reel Grips
« on: March 12, 2010, 04:56:13 AM »

I want to know how you feel about them. I recently bought a new reel and I finally got it out on the water and while I was using it something was seriously wrong. The reel handles were to skinny and smooth, I had not realized how attached I got to the feeling of these guys on my reels. When I first put them on they felt awkward and bulky but now it just doesn't feel right w/o them.

Anyone else experience this?

I have never actually used them before, and to start now would cost me a bunch of $$$$ for all the baitcasters I have collected  lo

Well your missing out, I got mine on sale last year when BPS had them clearanced for 2.99. Now I have to go buy 4 more sets at $5 a pop.....ouch. I also want to try the rod grips as well, if they are as comfy as the reel grips then they will be well worth the $10.

I got mine on sale , as well as having a pair given to me.  I love em, but not all of my reel handles fit them.  One reel has a twisted grip, don't know how else to explain it, and some of my other handles are too wide.  They fit excellently on my Revo's however.  I can fish with or without them, just takes a little getting used to.

Have never tried them.  Have always been unsure of the cost vs benefit.  Do they make that much of a difference?  I don't see what they would really do for you, my thumb and forefinger don't suffer from not using them, but maybe I don't know what I am missing.

I really can't explain why I like them. They do give you more grip, but its not as if my fingers were slipping off the stock grips before. They claim you get more sensitivity but I don't know if I would go that far. They are just plain comfortable.

As for the size I really had to try to stretch them on my Curado, but now that they are on they are good to go.

just a short follow up - when i was testing them out i had them on one reel and was flippin for maybe 30mins or so with it. picked up a different rod and things felt very strange and it took me several mins to figure out what was wrong or why it felt that way. i knew for sure what it was when i picked the flippin stick back up. after that i had them on every reel. they do make a difference when fishing in the rain. doug

The old ones didn't fit as good as the new ones and would slip off my reel handles from time to time, lost count of how many times I pulled one off when setting the hook.   ~xyz ~rant ~xyz  Anyway that’s because of the way I set the hook; I use both hands with a up sweep to the right and my right hand pulls on the reel handle so after a few hooks sets without checking the reel grips one would pop off.  The new ones on the market are a much better fit iClass and seam to stay on better so far.  The best benefit is if you have big hands it's a cheep and comfortable way to get bigger handles without having to pay for a new over size power handle for your reel.  Also when fishing in the rain or in the heat of summer when sweating you have much better control and I don't suffer from finger slip near as much but the part I noticed the most was when using smelly jelly and mistakenly got some on my right hand the reel grips help a lot because that stuff is like oil and without them I spend a lot of extra time getting it off my hand and reel handles because it makes them so slippery.

I use grips also but their called "Gator Grips" (The old black ones).

I change out the whole handle system.  I like the over size reel handles and black grips.

Just like docav, I have them on every baitcasting reel I own.  BPS don't sell the older models anymore I had to go online and order them.

sort of funny on the rod grips...we spend all this money chasing higher modulus, stiffer rods..lighter rods...all to get better feel...

then we cover all that up with vibration dampening tape for comfort?

Not sure if you guys have dicks sporting good in all states but they sell them for $2.99 everyday.  I have also just recently noticed that Dicks and Cabelas are cheaper then BPS on just about every product.

I want to but them on my Mojos so I will only be using a couple inches of the grip. The exposed part of the blank will still be exposed. But I see where you are coming from.

I use them on my Citica but dont feel like I need them on my Revo's.  I feel like the handles on the Citica D are to slick compared to the Revo handles, but they have improved that on the Citica E similar to the Revo.

I haven't tried them yet, but I guess now Ill have to.  You guys are costin me a lot of money ~roflmao.

I was thinking if you have trouble getting them on, maybe soak them in some Hot water for a few minutes prior to install.

I don't use 'em...

guess that's cause I only have 'mere mortal' sized paws...   lo

now, if I were ever to consider using them, I'd have to say, the would have to be black.  The 'colors' offered up just strike me as more style than substance...  but I'm sure that's just me...

I'd rather put that $$ in a new lure...

An old bicycling trick for getting grips on was to spray the inside of the grip with a little aquanet or such.   They slide right on, and the hairspray helps the grip stick to the aluminum handle.  I'd bet it would work even better with rubber on rubber.

As far as the Curado and grip goes,  I was fishing in very cold wet weather yesterday and was amazed at how much grip I had on the reel handles.

If you go over to the BPS online store they have them. You can also do a google search for Reel Grips and order them directly from the company.
