Tombigbee River - Pickensville, AL
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:14:05 AM »

With the water rising yesterday (Thursday, March 11), I could not concentrate on work. I was chomping at the bit to get on the water for a few minutes. It was 4:00PM before I got underway. Ran to a spot where the water narrows to a backwater area. Water temperature was 63.5! The water was 2-3 feet deep and moving slowly. Third cast with a crawfish Rattletrap...bam...missed him...didn't move the bait another three feet and another one hit it...Five pounder. On the next cast I had another one just hammer my little crawfish but did not hook up. Three or four casts I had fish hit the bait hard without hookup. Then several casts without a bite. Picked up a shallow running crankbait (1-3 feet)...missed one on the first cast...caught 2.5 pounder on the next cast...missed two more. Then, the spot cooled. Sure did get a lot of good bites on that spot to only catch two of the fish. Fished an area less  than one acre and caught two more (2.5 lbs) before dark on the crankbait. Also, missed a good fish on a hollow swimbait. This fish was in about 14 inches of water. All in all it was a nice hour of fishing.

Looks like the rivers are getting high and muddy as usual this time of the year. Sounds like you had a good time.

Haven't fished Pickensville in years.  It used to have some Big Fish there, but had a bad die off.  Has the River fully recovered from it??  Haven't heard a lot from that water since.

Pickensville has recovered from the die off. We have a Tuesday night tournaments during the summer. To win last year, it took around ten pounds for a three fish limit most all summer. A few years ago, five pounds would have done it. Early in the year, the winning weights were even better. You still don't see the huge fish with the regularity of the glory days, but the lake is definitely better than it has been in years. And, oh yeah, the fishing pressure is back as well.
