Straightening Trolling Motor Shaft
« on: March 12, 2010, 11:39:49 AM »

I have a MotorGuide Trolling Motor and hit a rock, slightly bending the shaft. It is still usable. However, when I turn sharply to the left, it becomes difficult to turn and makes a grinding noise. The noise is annoying and I fear the long term strain on the cables will cause problems if I don't get it fixed.

Help! I need your best tip to straightening the shaft.

I was able to wedge the motor shaft in the tailgate of my pickup and bend it back.

I wedged mine in the frame of the boat trailer . If you know someone with a press it is a lot easier.

I bent mine and the way to fix it is to take it apart. I didnt figure this out until I got a new one, this might get confusing since I dont know what the technical terms are. One you remove the cover you will see a toothed piece that mates up with a gear. That gear is what turns the trolling motor. If you can get that gear off you will be able to slide the two pieces apart and take them to a muffler shop to get them straightened out. I could never get that gear off the top. There is a locking allen bottle in the gear to keep it from moving I took that out and still not luck. You need to get this fixed I used mine for a while after I bent it and the added pressure to turn it caused me to crack plastic of the foot pedal. Hope this helps.

I bent mine (Brute 767) by taking off WOT with the trollin motor down ~rant ,It was not pretty!! I ended up opening up the cover and the pinion gear was all chewed up and the top shaft needed to be replaced, it had a crease in it and couldn't be bent back out. I was able to bent the bottom shaft.

Once I ordered and received the parts it was really easy to take apart and put back together. To get that pinion gear off, if you need to replace your gonna need two pipe wrenches. I got all parts need from Mikes reel repair and they were very helpful and have a ton of trollin motor parts schematic's. One more thing if you do need to break it down take a picture of the wiring makes life a little easier.
