Better reel $ for $
« on: March 16, 2010, 04:24:52 PM »

I need a couple pro's and con's vs the Revo Premier vs. the Core 50 both weigh the same. I have a chance to get a Core for $300 brand new in box. I really don't know as far as the components of either. I'm still trying to master the baitcaster but I'm having a hard time passing up a good deal. :help:

Are you getting the Revo for full price or is it a closeout?

Heya bfs, they are both good reels but the core is lighter than the premier....the shimano core 50 mg weighs in at 5.5 ounces while the premier is 6.35 ounces and it has more line capacity than the core 50. The core is lighter because it has more magnesium components and the premier has an aluminum body but it is still 27% lighter than the revo stx and the lightest aluminum body reel out there(or so abu says). If money is an issue the premier is on sale right now for $179.99, leaves more money for lures!  ;D Another thing is the core has 9 bearings to the premier's 6. Personally I am waiting until I can buy a core for myself as I have already held it in my hands as a combo, had it placed on a cumara reaction series 7'7" Medium action rod and it felt light as a feather! The rod I already have now I just need the core!  ;D The rod weighs in at 4.585 ounces and 5.5 ounces for the reel and that equals 10.085 ounces for rod and reel.

It's a toss up either way, they are both great reels.  To me Shimano and Abu Garcia are the two best all around reel companies on the market, and I mean no disrespect to any of the others.  I like both, but I'm a Abu Garcia guy.  They are the only reels I fish and I have never had a single problem with them.  Even the lower end AB reels are rock solid especially for the price.

You already have some good answers here. In a head to head between the two, with money not being considered, I would take the core. If money is considered, go with the revo.

I have to second the Abu products. the Orra and Revo series are great. If you have a new baitcast fishermen the max series is not a bad way to go either.

They changed the Premier from last years model to this years, so look closely.  I think this years Premier has more bearings and is slightly heavier than last years.  I think there are a few more changes, but thats all I remember off the top of my head.  I know I'm a bit old school, just bought my first 4 low profile ABU's last year, but I cant for the life of me see how an ounce or so can make any difference in your fishing day.  I've spent entire days chucking and winding with the older round 5500 C reels on glass rods, and never thoought much about the weight of the setup, but thats just me.  However if you're needing an excuse to buy a new reel, and you need to convince a certain someone, then it is a must to have the best and lightest you can find. ;)

Hey Joshuwa it's a closeout for $129.00 for the PREMIER.

We bought 3 of the them when they went on closeout. I would take my STX over the premier anyday of the week but for that price you will be hard pressed to find a better deal. Also you can send in and get a free pair of Wiley X's for every reel you buy  8).

We got ours at Gander Mtn. I am assuming that they were cleaning out last years stock so they can carry the new model.

Yup Gander Mtn. up here in Buffalo,NY but I don't think you can get the sunglasses for the $129.00 You have to spend $169.00 to get the free Wiley X sunglasses and you only get to choose from 2 pr. So it's up to you. Thanks for the help reguarding the updates on the new Premier.

I just used my receipt to get 2 more pairs of sunglasses. I called ahead and since the regular price is over 169.00 you are good. I already have 1 pair and they are pretty nice, especially for 12 bucks (shipping). I was going to get a 4th pair but I lost my receipt for the last reel I bought  ~b~.

I would def. go with the core. Although I love the revo's. After fishing shimano last month I have sold all of my premiers and went with Chronarch D's, The difference is night and day. If you dont mind a few extra onces, I would highly recommend the chronarch D and they can be had for around 240.00

I am not sure if the premier is the only Revo you fished with but if so, then you are missing out. IMO the (old) Premier can not hold a candle to the STX (or SX from what I have heard). I bought the premiers because of the price, but if I was in the market for another top end BC I would go back to the STX well.

With that being said I don't want to try and discredit the High end Shimanos because I have never used the Core or Chronarch. I do own a Curado E7 and I do love it, its not quite as smooth as the my STX but it was a couple bucks cheaper.

I have used the STX and reese models also. And I love them. But man IMO they dont compare to a core or chronarch. Try one I promise you wont look back.

I'm sure they are awesome reels but for the price of a core I can get 2 SX's. I don't think I will be dropping that kinda cash on a single reel anytime soon, that is unless we get a more comfortable couch to sleep on.  ;)

You can't go wrong with Shimano. You could always pick up two Curado E7 for the Core Reel. If you want to talk $ for $ the Curados are an excellent reel, IMO
