Lake Fork Help Please
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:58:15 AM »

I will be fishing Lake Fork this weekend and this will be my first trip. i will be staying at the trophy lodge but not certain where i will launch out of i guess this will depend where i decide to fish. if anyone could give me some pointers i would appreciate it greatly. i have fished toledo bend most of my life and now have the chance to check out lake fork and donate a little of my louisiana money to the great state of texas.  ~fff

Trophy Lodge is on the East Fork.  You can launch right there or if you want to fish the west fork you can launch at the public ramp on FM 17.

I hate to put a damper on your plans but, on Sunday there is a tournament with about 400 boats with prefishing on Saturday.  Also, the weather is calling for a big coldfront on Friday and heavy winds on Saturday.  Goooood Luck.

I don't fish much on the East Fork, but on the West Fork, I'd go to Mustang, Chaney, or Birch from midway to the back.  Don't know what the weather will do to the fish so be flexible.

Thanks alot this will help i didnt even know which side of the lake the trophy lodge was on but if there is a front coming and the wind is out of the west or the north west i will probably fish the west side to stay out of the wind.

I would go to Birch and run all the way to the end of the boat row and then idle straight to that point that is in front of you, The turn toward the nort bank  and fish it to the back. I can run it, but I don't want to try and explain it and have you tear up your boat.

Stop by Lake Fork Country store and get you some 6 to 8 inch water dogs.  Put them on a hook with a weedguard and flip them to trees in about 6' to 10' of water in coves.  Most people don't like using live bait but I'm there to catch fish when I go.  Those 400 other boats won't matter if you got water dogs.

I agee with ARbassman. My first trip to Fork was two days of not catching much. Then bought 20$ worth of water dogs, put them on a hook, threaded a worm on for a guard and we caught several over 5 and had one 10 plus bite. I fought her to the boat 3 times before ripping the hook from this sows mouth. I am stuborn, an idiot or a little of both, but still don't use a net.

Simple, just throw the dog out and it will go to the first log it finds. If it has a big bass laying next to it then the battle begins. Best of luck!

Also, if you see some coots, they are probably over some grass. Burn a trap (red of course) or c-rig through the grass. A guide put me on this, it works.
