Unless you think our founders were idiots and these people we have running our country are smarter than the men who risked everything to give us our freedom, then we have no problem.  We have to draw a line sometimes and take a stand to protect the very foundation of our liberty, which is privacy.  Buying votes in American politics is nothing new, but now they do it with our money, and not willing donor's money.  Our taxes are taken by force, yet we have little to say about where they are spent.  Charity starts at home, and I would definitely be able to raise my kids better, donate more time and money to my church, and help people I choose if the government were not deciding I need to help people that do not work because they are lazy.  The people that actually need help are always having their benefits cut, but keep thinking that the government is the golden goose.  It was never intended to be that way.

Stump, I do draw a gov check....I feel strongly about it because I gave my right arm to the Navy for that check.  Even though I am what they call disabled, I have never not had a job.  I own my own business, and it is hard to make ends meet because of the tax burden placed on small businesses.  I work 12 to 15 hours a day actually producing goods and services and hopefully turning a profit.  The government has never, ever produced anything!  It is a leach on the American worker that has grown full and greedy.  George Washington described government as a necessary evil that should always be kept under close watch.  Ben Franklin said that those who would trade liberty for security deserve, and will got neither. 

They don't need all that info on the census.  It is truly about how they can manipulate the transfer of wealth and keep themselves in power.....That goes for both parties.  Most politicians are lawyers, and there is not one screwed up thing in this country not caused by a lawyer.

I think we all have seen enough back room deals made on the current health care legislation to make us mistrust our government. I don't want to get into how our Military are treated after they are wounded and are not longer needed. It is a very ugly dark side of the military most thankfully do not get to see. I don't think you really want me to share what my wife and I have been through with the Army and the government since our son was severely wounded and not just my son but how all the wounded wounded warriors were treated at Fort Stewart. No, I do not trust our government for too many reasons.

as a registered republican, I must say this:  our government has earned our mistrust and that goes back much further than this current 'bunch'...

I believe the only fix for the modern day problems is to revert a majority of the laws and such on the books back around 200 years. With all the bureaucracy and expansion of government, it is now "by the government, for the government" and the people are just a side annoyance preventing them from completely running loose, of course that hasn't stopped the past few administrations, just slowed them down some.
Force 4 year term limits on all branches and offices of the government, maximum 2 terms. This includes judges. Right now the majority of the judges are completely out of touch with the fast paced and technological society that they have to rely on special interests such as RIAA and PETA to tell them what is right and wrong based on outdated or just plain wrong ideology, instead of science and "for the people".

There is a lot more to the government than congress guys. There a people who never ran for office who work 15 hour days to make sure people eat and have housing and children are not tortured to death in their own homes. I worked for 20 years so people would have a choice to be a solider or not.
How many jobs you have for these people in your area has a lot to do with those questions you see no reason to answer.

How many people still own their house vs rent has a lot to with quickly people will be homeless in bad times.

Race has a lot to do with how people react, how bad times treat them and what skills and race of people you need to hire in that area.

Age is common sense, schools vs hospitals, nursing homes.

I used a lot more information than that in annual briefings that determined how many recruiters I needed. Average household income, education level, average ACT/SAT scores, how far away from 2yr/4yr colleges.

It's all about limited resources and how to best deploy those resources for the most bang for the buck.

I don't trust anybody who is elected and plan to vote against everyone who holds an office now and give someone new a chance. But I also see a lot of people busting their humps for very little money to make this country a better place. If you don't believe that go find someone tomorrow with a Masters in Social work and ask to see their paycheck.

Your darn right I do.  I'll tell you one reason right now.  I would love to have very accurate data on the number of Hispanics in the area.  Because when I have kids and they go to school, I hope they are going to be taught Spanish.  And if they are not, I'm going to pay for it, because in 20 years, if you do not speak Spanish you are not going to be even considered for a lot of jobs because they are taking over.  They are already teaching Spanish in several states in this country as part of the regular curriculum, but I believe it should be taught at a very early level.  You can come on here and yell and scream about how this is the problem with the country, we are letting in too many immigrants. 

You can all get up in arms and say, why do they need that information.  Well, there's one reason right there.  I think the Public school system should be teaching Spanish as a regular class in Elementary School.  Just about every other First World Country teaches English to their students in Elementary School, so they can compete with us.  Census statistics from 2000 already projects that by 2030, Spanish will dominate the First language spoken of that decades children.  Your darn right I want that to be proven where I live so my kids won't be behind the majority...  And these so statistics your think are going to "Oh my god, why do they need to know," is just being ignorant.

The same can be said of Age - ie Baby Boomers in different areas.  Don't you think it important that there are sufficient Medical services and Hospitals in the area.  There's a wait list in my area for some folks to get Kidney Dialysis.  Really?  Here's someone that really needs this kind of medical treatment 3 times a week, and they have to travel hours to get it.  Nice.

It's not just about poverty, its about everything.  Education, roads, zoning areas, so many things are derived from these statistics.  It's not just, oh my god, they know I'm white so they are going to tax me more.  Get over yourself.

You guys can make excuses for the government wanting this extra info all you want, but when it is all said and done, it's still used for unconstitutional means.  The state governments already have the information about your status, race, "woops", etc.  If the government wants it bad enough, then they can trample all over themselves trying to figure out a legal way to get it from the states, rather than threatening me.

Right now in my warehouse at the job I work, it is full of Spanish speaking workers.  Why do we have so many, because we can't get English speaking workers that want to work the same shifts and for the same pay as we can afford.  So as a result, we pay a premium for our Warehouse managers to be able to speak fluent Spanish.  It is skill that they possess that makes them a much better manager by being able to speak to his employees in either English or Spanish.  Do I wish they all could speak English, absolutely.  Unfortunately, I live in an area that has a huge population of Hispanics that speak very little English.  Is it right, no.  But it is a fact of life here, so you are darn right my kids are going to learn to speak it.  You can choose not to teach your kid to speak it, and he'll be reporting to my kid later on in life because he does speak Spanish.  It is a skill that is going to be required for any Operations Manager in 10-20 years in a huge part of this country.  Am I excited about this, no freaking way.  But you can either prepare yourself for it, or just keep complaining about it.

CLZ:  I bet if we go back all those years ago when the 'micks' were immigrating that we'd be saying the same things about 'language'...or when the Krauts were commin' in...or the Russkies...

Immigrant 'groups' all come in with their language skills...the younger generations pick up english, their kids speak english...after 2-3 generations the 'new' kids don't speak the 'mother country' language much, if at all...


Its nothing new...I prefer to look at these people  in terms of whether they are good, law-abiding folks who want to do right versus wrong...beyond that, skin color, nationality, language really aren't something I fixate on...  although language requires more effort from me to communicate effectively...

The sad part is that most Americans have bought into the notion that the people they elect are actually watching out for them.  Stump, the 2nd Amendment is second because it is there to protect the rest of them.  Like them or not, guns made this country free, and have kept it free. 

The main reason the founders included the 2nd was to insure the populace could keep a tyrannical government at bay.  They knew what would happen when government became too big....They were fighting off tyranny and taxation when they wrote it. 

Don't forget guys, the Revolution was fought and won by only 3% of the population.  Impressive, to say the least.

The way the British looked at it they spent 100 years helping us fight off Indians and French and now we were ambushing them in the streets and they got tired of it. Maybe a leason we could pick up in Foreign policy. It doesn't take very many silver coffins to turn people off to reforming some other countries polices.

I believe in reform, but these next two elections is where the change should take place. I will go out and vote and let my voice be heard, not hide in the woods. I will also not hide who I am or where I live because I have nothing to hide.

Stump, you have some good points about our current situation, but you are way off on Britain.  The king saw us as a cash cow and was taxing the colonies to death(which happened to be half of what the average American is paying now).  We said no more, and threw off the repression after it was enforced by military involvement to collect taxes at the point of a gun.  The main reason only 3% were involved is easily explained by the lack of communication technology in the late 18th century.  We now have a system to enforce our will on government by voting, which is usually much more powerful than the gun, but we should still remember history is not nice to societies that are forced to give up their right to keep and bear arms.  Crime against unarmed citizens always rises, as does government involvement in their private lives.

Look at the folks in England: there was a discussion a few weeks back in a flashlight forum where some folks in the UK mentioned that they can't carry a stick to be used for "self defence" since it was illegal. One guy said he carried a bag of sand in his pocket, to be used to throw in the eyes of any would-be robbers if he got mugged. The discussion was started to find a bright light that would dazzle would-be robbers and give the intended victim time to escape since citizens weren't permitted to carry weapons.
