My First IL Bass Of 2010

A day after ice out. Weird Hr on the water. This bass was caught in less then a ft of water. I could have sworn it was carp making a ruckus, but when I saw a shad jumping out of the water and running for his life, I tossed the Red Eye Shad in Chrome/Blue over there and hooked into this bass. Talk about Bass moving shallow after ice out, it's been only a day of open water on this pond, this was the only one I caught, but I saw a few others just hanging out in the shallows, inches from the shoreline. Not only was I surprised to find them so shallow so early in the year, I was very surprised at how well this guy fought in cold water. He actually was jumping all over like a trout and even jumped right onto shore as I brought him in. He just hammered that Red Eye.

That's a great way to start the season. Nice fish! I feel very fortunate to be able to fish year round.

You give me hope that winter has finally turned away from us!! Nice one.  I was looking at the forecast for the next two weeks and nature sure is a tease.  I usually only get to get out on the weekends, look at these forecast temps.

Looks like I either brave the colder weekends or wait until the 28th to get out.   I actually got an hour in for the first time in months last sunday, but it was unfamiliar terratory as I tried to fish the kankakee river (which was fast muddy and overflowing). with not even a nibble to show for it, but it sure felt good to me out there.  I can imagine catching a nice fat bass was even nicer.  Congrats!!

I Hear that Dug. There calling for another snow day this Saturday. Going to have to get out for a bit today and tomorrow. I think I am going to try this 20 dollar Spro BBZ shad for a bit today. Bought two last year, lost one on the cast due to Power Pro breaking and have yet to even get a fish to look at the other one, but for 20 bucks and the fact the bass where busting shad yesterday, I have to at least try it again before I add it to the list of the bait monkey tricked me into doing it lures I have purchased over the years. I have several of such that I have hanging off a shelf on my desk for if they can't catch fish at least they make good decorations. LOL
