Massive cold front- what to do?
« on: March 19, 2010, 05:42:55 AM »

I'm fishing in my first tournament of the year on Saturday.  It's been in the 60s and will be 65 today.  Tomorrow the high will be 40 with a 70% chance of snow and rain.  It is a power plant lake and the water temps are anywhere from mid 60s to low 70s.  I've heard reports that some females that have been caught have already dropped their eggs.  At least there won't be as many boats out there.  Any advice?

The females will likely be deeper or move up close to the power plant drainage area which will typically be warmer water. The males that protect the eggs will likely stay on the bed even with the cold front, but they will either be real lethargic and not move for anything, or very defensive and nail anything that comes close. The best bite may be early on before the actual front itself moves through, and the rest of the day I suspect will be very rough.

This is a rough time of year for the spawn because of so many colder than usual cold fronts moving through.

Also because of the tough bite this year, cheaters have been resorting to various techniques so make sure that all boats livewells are checked before launch. Speak with the organizer or someone with authority there and just say "I am aware that there may be someone cheating but I would rather not give any names for fear they are not, please check all the livewells before launch."

The bite won't die untill the clouds part.  Fish that were committed to spawning and locked on the bed won't pull back even after the sun comes out.   ~gf  Some of the best days you can have on the water can be post front during the spawn if you time it right.
