BRAIDED LINE QUESTION
« on: March 20, 2010, 08:01:31 AM »

I READ THAT PWR. PRO BLEEDS AND SUFFIX DOESN'T. IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE WHY YOU WOULDN'T USE SUFFIX FOR ALL YOUR BRAID NEEDS?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME TO GIVE ME SOME LIGHT ON THIS TOPIC? I KNOW THAT VICIOUS NOW MAKES A PEN WITH A V SHAPE IN IT TO RECOLOR YOUR LINE WHEN NEEDED BUT WHY DO THAT IF YOU CAN GET A LINE THAT DOESN'T BLEED OUT?

I have been using green Power Pro for over a year now and never seen any bleeding... most of what I have heard about bleeding is from the red only, not the yellow or green.

Any colored line of any kind will fade, and braid just happens to fade more because it is a coloring and not built into the line itself like the mono, fluoro and copoly lines. For people that like to keep their color, any sharpie will color the line and last just as long (provided you let it dry and not just toss it in the water after coloring it). I found that what stays in the water the most actually keeps its color for some time, but the line about 20-60 feet out that stays in the sun more often while fishing is where the color fades. Since it is not in the water and does not affect strength, I don't bother touching it up.

Yes, the color will come out of PowerPro (and any other braid for that matter) relatively quickly, turning gray.  That's all right by me because I think it actually helps camoflage the line even better.  When you think about it, many strikes occur with the fish coming from underneath the lure.  When you're underwater and looking up, all you see is gray and shades thereof.  What blends in better to a gray overhead than gray line?

And to me, when I see the color coming out of the line, I know it's getting broken in and it's becoming nice and limp.  It doesn't have any effect on the strength of the line at all.

Agreed, Suffix is good line but I just like and prefer the Power Pro better. I think I have just lost one too many lures with suffix to get discouraged using it.

Love the whole Suffix brand, the braid fades a little, first time out I had a green thumb, but it seems to be great line.

Usually when I respool my reels the filler line underneath has a good green tint to it from the dye running out of the PP. As was stated before I don't think that the faded green is going to make you catch any less fish. I use PP because I love it, but I don't love how expensive it is getting so I did spools 2 spinning reels up with 10lb suffix braid, we will see how well it holds up.....but I don't really forsee dumping PP anytime soon.

What many consider Bleeding with the PP is actually just the wax coming off the line.

The line doesn't actually get good untill it fades some.  ;)

I agree. It's like a pair of work boots, once you get the shine off you get get down to business. It becomes more supple, manageable, and less likely to slice your finger clean off  lo

I hear that!! It can be bad first thing in the morning on a hook set and you realize you didn't set your drag up and that little slip of braid across your finger is painful.  :surrender:   Not that I have ever experienced that.  ~shade

My wife has gotten some before that were candidates for stitches. She works with kids so she has very soft hands and because she is getting used to using braid I am constantly respooling fresh line ~shade .....not a good combo, she's defiantly a bleeder

I hear blood on the line, especially close to or on the lure is actually something that would draw fish in... not sure of the truth in that but definitely an interesting perspective.

Thanks for all the input, most of it makes sense. I never cut myself yet but sounds like I'll know when I do. :'(

I cut myself all the time with my braid(PP) while tying knots and it cuts so clean they hardly ever bleed!  lo

I wish they would sell the braid pre-faded and pass the savings of less dye on to us.  :-*

If you are looking for a great braid that is smooth to the touch and won't bleed check out Berkley's new Fireline Braid. I have been using various braided line over the past 20 years and this stuff is impressive.

Fireline green color? It bleeds very well, actually looks like grass stain on my thumb after using it for 1 hour. This was just last week.

I've tried just about every braid known to man.  They ALL bleed to one degree or another.  PowerPro seems to bleed less than a lot of the others, especially if it's used a lot.
