Replacing round split rings
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:24:15 PM »

Do any of you replace the round split rings (at the line tie) with the oval ones? What size did you use? I would imagine one size cold just about fit all bass sized lures right?

This year i have started replacing some of the round split rings on my crankbaits with oval ones.  Its supposed to let them run straighter.  As for the size i would just compare the ones you buy, to ones that already come on certain crankbaits.  Luckycraft only uses oval split rings, so try to match the size they use.  I haven't seen a big improvement with the the oval split rings but Ive been out once this year so far.  There not expensive, so give it a try and see if you like them.  Goodluck.

I've been replacing the round with oval for several years. I only use an oval split ring that's made by Worth. It's a magnesium alloy, and they don't deform like stainless, even when assembling them, so I haven't messed any of them up!  ::)

I first started using them on my big saltwater lures, because I had a problem with the line getting stuck down in the split & it would sometimes fray my line, even though I make a point of tying to the split ring on the opposite side. That problem has been resolved since I started using the oval split rings.

I also liked them on my big topwater lures that I use for Striped Bass, I got good action with them, and didn't have to worry about fraying the line at the tie point. I don't like using snaps & with these big lures, a loop knot had to be used to get the right action. I used heavy mono, and it was really not what I wanted to use. I now can use lighter line by using the oval split rings.

These split rings are made in different sizes, and I've been swapping them on my bass lures too, even some of my topwater lures. Since these rings are stronger & lighter than the similar size round, I use a smaller size for most of my crankbaits.

So far I have not had any issues with using them.  :)

I take the split rings off and use a quick clip on the line directly to the lure. It is quick change and strong. They are oval shaped.

B igJim where can I get the oval split rings you use. Does Worth have a website or do you get them from a retailer like Bass Pro?

I was using the Bass Pro ones but I ruined a bunch  because they deform easily.

Worth has a website. www.worthco.com The rings are called X2 oval rings.

I bought some from Zeiners Bass Shop too. www.zeiners.com, they have them listed under the same category as Do-It molds. Good folks to deal with!

I hope this helps!  :)

Your not kidding. Not only are they a bear to get on, but they do deform easy.

Soft steel or poorly made. Good ones are tempered spring steel and take a bit of effort to deform.
