12' jon boat motor question
« on: January 23, 2006, 08:39:56 PM »

hello all, first off my anme is Erik, and I live in Tennesse. I am an Army MP and just bought a 12' jon boat from one of my fellow Mp's. My question is what size outboard can I or should i put on this boat. It is 12' long and 45" across at its widest. the inside of the boat is 32" at the floor and from the bottom of the boat to the top is 15" any help would be appreciated. I bought the boat with a trailer and new in the box trolling motor for $200. I could not turn this down. Thanks again, any help is appreciated.

welded, thanks for the info. Its obvious that I am very new here, but I feel that I will be here quite often now. I was just curious what size most people put on a boat this size.

I used to have an old 14' Orlando Clipper that I put a 15 Mariner on.  It ran great, but then I added a pad to it, changed the prop, tinkered with the motor a bit, and then really had it running great... :roll2:

Used to have a 13 ft Kennedy Craft - put a 15hp Evinrude on it and it ran like a champ.

It is a hand operated trolling motor. Thanks the guy I bought it from was asking $250 and I offered hiim $200 and he took it so I thought to myself that I couldnt pass this up. I am thinking along the lines of aroung 5hp I am afraid to go higher becuase of weight issues.

you could go 9.9 without any trouble a 15hp would let you scoot along real nice.  You know you don't have to run WOT with it, but would be nice to go faster if you wanted.

I had the same boat years ago and had a 9.9 on mine and it moved pretty well. I wouldn't go over the 9.9 limit myself for safety reasons. The boats fix up real nice depending on what you want to do to it and how much money you want to spend. wood floor. carpet, pedestal seats trolling motor etc. I enjoyed fixing mine up the way i wanted it. I loved that Jon boat because i could get into the shallows with it. Dint forget the essentials if adding motor. Fire extinguisher etc........ Good luck

Another question, since the boat has a transom of 15" I need a short shaft motor right? also at what length would a person need a long shaft?

short shaft is the ticket. Long shaft would be for a big boat like one you would see on lake michigan or big sail boat.

Be Very Careful There------crookedeyemoto-x, you might think you are buying a silk pruse and wind up with the sow's ear.........I know a few (4-5) people that thought what they were buying was great, but would up putting more money into it then it was worth.............Look now that most states and the feds have made outboards go to fuel injection there are some real good buys at marinas and boat places on carburated motors...You can still use these on older boats, just not on new ones, and there are a lot of trade-ins and leftovers to choose from

well, I found a used Mercury 9.9 at a boat repair shop on the way home from work today. I think this might be the one and just wanted to know if any one could give me feedback on these before I purchase. The gentleman selling the motor is asking $450. I think that I might be able to get it cheaper though. any thoughts?

~c~ ~c~ Sounds like a great deal if it comes from a repair shop...Has the man worked on it or at least heard it run........If your not going against heavy current in a big river that 9.9 should give you all the push power you need.............See if he nibbles for $350.00, better yet go to $300.00 and negotiate up if you have too

I will, adding onto my first question after using a formula that I got off of the coast guards web-site on the lenght and width of mt boat the formula says that a flat bottom hard chine boat like my jon boat cannot have over a 6 hp motor. Will the 9.9 be ok?
