Title: Reel suggestion for Dobyns 634CB
Post by: 68camaro on October 20, 2015, 10:32:53 PM
Ordered Dobyns 634CB today. Main uses are Jerk Baits and Poppers in 1/4 - 1/2 oz range. Planning to pair with 8 lb flouro on Curado 200 6.3:1 reel.

Due to short size of rod, is there a better bait casting reel I should look at to compensate for short rod length to get further casts?

Thanks

Find a used Curado50E, or Core50. Or, if you don't mind ordering from Japan, the Daiwa Alphas SV is a killer reel for light baits.

I have 3 stickbait rods with 3 different reels.. Shimano,Daiwa and Lews, . They all work fine..
As good as the baits cast these days I doubt you would have trouble with any of them.
I throw the vision 110 and Mcsticks mostly.. If you plan on throwing Rogues or pointer 78's most of the time go with LMG's advice. The 50 series will throw anything .

X3 on the 50e. I use a scorpion 1000xt on my ML jerkbait rod and I cast 1/8 to 1/2 oz hardbaits no problem.

I have a CH50e on my 635CB. I hated it for Jerkbaits. Tip is too slow to work them for me. I originally purchased it for Jerkbaits but use it for topwater only now.

I know it's rated for it, but 1/2oz felt like it was pushing it for me on the 634. Personally, I'd stick with 3/8oz and below. It would make a hellova PopX rod though.

In my opinion, you're overdoing it on the 200 sized reel. I use 100-200 sized for heavy applications. Smaller application like PopX's Pointer 78's, I see no reason to go bigger than a 50-100 reel.

More than anything the reel of a set up is just to take up line. The most important thing is that it feels good to you.

Not knowing what curado 200 model you have, they are all fine except the D model IMO, it's heavy.

The reels listed in this thread are excellent choices but can get pricy.

I'm a shimano fan but own one Lews and it's the cheapest one they make and it's awesome with light line.

Thanks all. My Curado's are the 200 are the i, HG and PG.

Once rod arrives I'll test with the 200 (6.3:1) and see how it casts and works.  I do think it could be on heavy size but overall its a great reel and since I have it on my other three rods I am very comfortable with it.

It should do very well with jerkbaits.

Hey Mike, is the 300 that is available still a D model?  Just wondering.

OK, was wondering, I knew it wasn't a current letter.

Update: Shortly after getting the 634CB I purchased a Team Lew's LITE Speed Spool (TLL1H) 6.8:1 casting reel.

The Lite Speed spool is perfect compliment for the short light rod. I have average sized hands at best but I can easily palm the reel and get a good verticle snap while on shore without hitting water, sideways works great also.  The weight of the reel is perfect as well, just feels like they were born to be together.

With the 27 different brake configurations I get really good distance even on real small lures. The setup is perfect for Jerkbaits and poppers/topwaters.

~c~  Glad you found the perfect reel for that rod!  Now we're looking forward to catch pictures with it in the background.
